Pre-Purchace Thread (Suggestions Appreciated)

Hey OCN!

This is my first post here so I will do my best to make it good!

So I decided to build my first custom computer, but after watching my brother build one a year and a half ago and still have freezing issues to this day, I am opting to have a company build this machine for me.

The company I chose after a bit of research is Computerlx.com. I know many of you will argue that it is much more cost effective to buy the parts on my own and to put it all together myself. To this I say: I have checked and I am spending about $200 to have the peace of mind that if and when anything does happen to my computer, they will be fixing it for me. They will also be overclocking my CPU to 4.6Ghz stable without me touching one thing.

Now the reason I am posting here is to see what your opinion of what I put together. Do you see anything in here that I should stay away from or should nix off completely? I welcome any and all suggestions and comments! Although try and stay away from intentionally trolling... heh

Oh yea, I will be using this system for 90% Gaming and 10% multitasking while gaming. I do play certain MMO's that I enjoy running multiple instances of at the same time. I also want to build this with the future in mind, I want a comp that can stand a good 3-4+ years without an upgrade (maybe another vid card, but we'll get to that.)
Title: In Progress

Case: Antech Twelve Hundred

CPU: Intel i7 2600K 3.4Ghz stock (I may get it overclocked to 4.6Ghz from the company or opt to overclock on my own)

CPU Cooler: Corsair H70 Enclosed Water System

MB: Asus P8P67 Deluxe

GPU: ATI 6970 (I may opt for a second card in the future to CF)

GPU Cooler: Stock or may opt for a 120mm fan pointed at it. Not too sure about attaching an aftermarket fan to the GPU itself as it seems a bit risky for a first timer like me.

Storage: I’m pretty set on an OCZ Vertex 3 240GB SSD
I have read that there were/are firmware issues, but I am still not sure of the current facts. I read that only 1-3% of Vertex 3 drives are experiencing the BSOD and other errors, is that still true after the 2.08 firmware update?

Memory:
Here’s where it gets iffy. I know that I want 8G (2x4Gb) RAM and that I want it running at 1600Mhz or higher. What I don’t know is what frequency I want them running at nor am I set on which Cas latency to get.

I can get G.Skill Snipers @ 1600Mhz Cas9, I can opt Corsair Vengeance @ 1600Mhz Cas8 for $30 more or for G.Skill Ripjaws @ 1600Mhz Cas7 for $50 more than the snipers. I know that tighter latency means better performance, but will that even be noticeable for the 30-50% increase in price?

Also, if I do want to spend extra on the ram, would 18xxMhz or 2000Mhz ram be better for me since I can always downclock the Freq to get lower latency timings? (This is theoretical to me, I have yet to ever OC a system at all but my brother has some experience and I do lots of research before venturing into new things)

Last thing on memory – I had never heard of G.Skill before about a week ago and I’m still unsure whether they are reputable enough or not for me… I know that Crucial and Corsair have very good ram and I would probably prefer to go with them because of their company name, but would I be paying a premium for no reason?
PSU: Not really sure what to do for this one. Suggestions please?
Keep in mind that id like to upgrade at some later date (probably not too soon but eventually) to CF 6970.

Optical Drive: Probably getting a 12x Bluray RW/DVD RW drive, but im not too sure since I don’t know if that drive will be able to write dual layered Blurays, nor am I sure on if its 24x for Dual layer DVDRW.
Did I miss anything? Did I put something in that you completely disagree with? Have any general suggestions? Feel free to comment and help me out!

TL;DR - Look at my Sig rig and tell me what you think of it, any suggestions or comments?

Thanks!
Wololo

Do NOT get that ssd, i see threads every day about it bsoding, grab an intel one, a good blu-ray solution is one like i have, it can read blu rays write dvds and cd's it was also a fair amount cheaper than a blu ray burner, brands to look at for ram: mushkin, gskill right now there ram is the best, im going to point out that past 1600mhz there is next to no difference for anything, i would recommend a low voltage 1600 kit

your computer is going to need a 500watt psu, anything higher than that theres no point, look for silver or gold certifications, use jonnyguru to reference for quality, THE best psu rating website there is

where are you putting the rest of your data? games will eat 250 gigs VERY quickly

to the building yourself thing, it takes me 30 minutes to strip my computer completely and re assemble, your paying 200 for 30 mins of work, probably less, putting computers together is very very simple

Thanks for the detailed and speedy response JohnDProb!

I will continue to look into SSD's as you suggested. The reason I chose the Vertex 3 was because it had the best reviews everywhere that I could find.. Maybe I just need to stay away from SF2200?

I didnt realize that a 500Watt psu would be enough for all that and a possible second video card, Thanks for the input! I will be sure to go over to jonnyguru before I make the decision.

Any others have any input? This is my first custom comp as I said and I dont want to skimp it anywhere...

now that i think about it your likely to be overclocking while a good 500w can handle that 600w would be good to, a few names FYI to mention are XFX, corsair and seasonic,

and yes personally i would avoid the sf2200

im going to point out quickly that the corsair closed water loop systems can be somewhat over rated, not saying thier bad, but you can get air coolers that perform equally

No 500W or 600W PSU is going to sustain 6970s in CF. You'd need a top end 650W unit for that. I'd also suggest not getting the Antec 1200 if you want to watercool in the future. That case is notorious for making watercooling a hassle. Oh, and look at a 256GB M4. They're not bad for their price. Of course, it will not write nearly as fast as the Vertex 3 and the read speeds will be slightly slower too.

Just saw your edit JohnDProb.
I will be putting all my games on the SSD and the rest of my info onto a HDD, although I dont see too much being taken up by videos/songs/other stuff.

As far as putting it together, that was the least of my worries or reasoning for going with a company. I am sure I could put all of the pieces together correctly, but ensuring that all the drivers are correct and actually overclocking the CPU to a stable point with good voltages, etc. seems like a daunting task and if I do any of that wrong, it would be a whole lot more than just the 30 mins it takes to physically put the parts together. (Dont take this as attitude, im just sayin mah point)

SSD - Is there really a noticable difference between the M4 performance and Vertex 3 performance in real world? What about to people who have never used SSD before?
The reason I was so into Vertex 3 was because it boasts very high performance specs and I would like to get the best of the best with this computer. That being said, I do not want to go through the issues of freezing or BDOS all the time...

Watercooling- I wont be installing it, so would you still say that case is still bad Hangman? If you still feel the case is bad, which would you counter-suggest for me?

I have heard that the H70 and H50 are glorified air on some forums and reviews, and that they keep your CPU within very good temp ranges under load and at idle from others. Other than $$$, what factor should make me consider air cooling over water cooling?

I really appreciate all the info guys, keep it coming! I'm going to be dropping about $2300 or so on this so I dont want to get anything wrong~!

If you're using an all-in-one loop, you won't have a rad bigger than 240mm, which is fine for the Antec 1200. The problem with the 1200 for watercooling comes when you want to add rads bigger than 240mm since there is really no where to put them. Regardless, the 1200 will be good for you. Make sure you get the V3 since it has USB 3.0, a black interior, and mostly importantly holes for cable management. As for the SSD, I have no experience with either models, but I would take a guess that the real world difference between 500 MB/s read and 415 is negligible. Write, however, is far different. The Vertex 3 is 450 but the M4 is only 95. I guess it depends how often you write large files. Finally, the cooler. I find the H50/H60/H70 to be a waste. The H50/H60 is no better than a similarly priced air cooler and the H70 is overpriced. I'd say the H100 is going to be better than any air cooler, but I haven't seen any reviews or a price for it yet. The benefit an all-in-one loop can offer over a high end air cooler is space savings and the ability to have a silent computer, depending on the fans used for the rad.

going to point out a very common misconception watts in general are way way overestimated, a good 500w psu can pull 500w continuous, allot of them can peak higher, my rig from the wall at load pulls around 180w from the wall, thats while folding on everything
