Boooooooo sports games <flamesuit>

I've been thinking about building a second machine for gaming and setting it up with a new TV and controllers/wireless M/KB. The idea of chilling on the couch drinking beer is an alluring one, but I have no intentions of purchasing a console ;p

I think everyone has fond memories of sitting around a console with friends. But I play games alone now, and the PC is where that is at (for me).

Where something comes from is irrelevant.

Most PC games were developed FOR consoles, yet they are almost always better on a PC.

Not that either isn't a great experience, but I think that the PC dedicated server is just more... dedicated.
I'd rather invite my friends around my house, or go to their house (in real life, not by your analogy). That's more social than playing online either way, in my opinion.

Nothing beats the face to face factor of gaming socially (on any platform). Not for me. Sitting next to my friends as we tear a game up is so much better than over a mic.

I don't see how, in this respect, a dedicated server is really any different to an undedicated one. You can still meet new people and make new friends. You can also do that via matchmaking. The only difference I see is how you do it, not the ability to do it.

Haha - yes absolutely. I'm having fond memories of Goldeneye and Mariokart now. Plus loads and loads and loads of trashtalk.

Well with a dedi - you get regulars, potentially TONS of them. I mean, I can know 30 people on a single dedicated server community who rotate in and out and form a gigantic base of people in one frequent spot.

I know I can go to server X, Y or Z and see my peeps at any time, but if they aren't around I'm still smashing in my house. Eh, potato potatoe. Like so many things, it is a personal thing that gets way over inflated in terms of better or worse.

Game on people!

Ahh, partner, you didn't really just go there, did you?

You don't get what I'm saying here, in this case, pertaining to this situation. What I was attempting to say with this statement was that proof that PCs overlap consoles in performance (which is already one million percent obvious), is that console games come from PCs.

I can agree with this now you put it across differently, though it isn't really a win lose feature for me.

Like you say, it's a personal thing.

With this said there are dedicated servers on consoles aswell, though not as numerous (Warhawk and the Rainbow 6 Vegas series come to mind here).

thats what will never happen on console games. A community that builds around a server. Its also something that a console gamer doesnt understand. They have their friendslist, nothing more. We have a server which just like hanging out at your local whatever that you frequent and know everyone there. You develop friendships, and rivalries, which are as good as making friends.

Inviting friends over to play games, well, nothing stops them from bringing their computer with also.

Warhawk

Chromehounds was another good one until the servers were pulled, though it worked alot differently.

Rainbow 6 Vegas was also pretty good for it too, though not as good as Warhawk and Chromehounds.

Why bring your computer, mouse, keyboard, headphones/speakers, and monitor, (not to mention setup space, & travelling with it all, etc) when you can just bring your USB stick with your gamer profile on it?

Realistically, while certainly possible, it's just not really as practical to lumber your entire PC setup just to game with your friends.

Maybe that's why most PC gamers need dedicated servers, lol.

I quote someone on OCN somewhere

"ATI cards are like buses, they're big, red and have terrible drivers.

Not to start a flame war but in terms of having to get drivers that work nVidia is a lot easier than ATI. Except that they generally cost a bit more. installing drivers dosent take that much more than installing windows, cept being neutral in this argument I do see why people who cant be arsed choose consoles.

Like that saying goes "The more work you put in, hopefully the more you get out of it"
