Please help me find a decent video card.

Thread Starter
I recently received a gift, it was a socket 604 Xeon server machine. 2 Physical CPUs, with Hyper Threading. Yes its a dinosaur, but it was free, its not really worth selling, and I really want to put it to use, as a very very and I mean VERY light, gaming machine. At the max I want be to be able to play COD4 MW1 at low res with decent frames. In terms of CPU performance its about equal to a 2.4GHz AMD x2, its got 2gb of ram, and MW1 is 4 years old. (most likely will also continue to run XP)

It has these available slots
2xPCI
1xPCIE-x4
2xPCI-X (no video cards available for this slot, believe me dont even bother looking)

Thats never going to happen with a PCI Video card, and since the best PCI cards out there are dinosaurs themselves this leaves me with no choice but that one nice little PCI-E x4 slot.

I cannot for the life of me find a PCI-E x4 video card, not one at all, google, newegg, tiger, tried it all.

Some one please help me out, from what I have read PCI-E x4 is about as fast in terms of transfer rate as AGP 8x, there has to be some where a decent video card that would fit.

Please help. If there are truly no video cards for PCI-E 4x please let me know so I can stop searching, this is driving me nuts.

i just looked on google and it says , You can use any PCI Express card on any version, 1.0, 2.0, x4, x8; it's globally compatible if the card is PCI-E and the slot is PCI-E . That doesn't matter but sticking that in an old PCI-E 1.0 slot at 4x is questionable because of the potential loss in performance. <-- not my info .. but i had a look

COD 4 aint too light yet buddy =P how bout minecraft, runescape, or maplestory , and that board has a PCI-E lane i belive, since PCI-E 1.0 was already introduced then, so im willing to bet any card will work, but just grab a 4670 or a 5670 or a GT 520

To help: quoting wikipedia (which i agree with in this article)

Quote:
A PCIe card will fit into a slot of its physical size or larger (maximum x16), but may not fit into a smaller PCIe slot (x16 in a x8 slot). Some slots use open-ended sockets to permit physically longer cards and will negotiate the best available electrical connection. The number of lanes actually connected to a slot may also be less than the number supported by the physical slot size. An example is a ×8 slot that actually only runs at ×1; these slots will allow any ×1, ×2, ×4 or ×8 card to be used, though only running at ×1 speed. This type of socket is described as a ×8 (×1 mode) slot, meaning it physically accepts up to ×8 cards but only runs at ×1 speed. The advantage gained is that a larger range of PCIe cards can still be used without requiring the motherboard hardware to support the full transfer rate, which keeps design and implementation costs down.
So in essence, you need to look at your motherboard and see if you PCIe-x4 slot is open ended. Or take a pic with your phone and post it up so we can take a look.

Report back, so we know what direction we need to go with this thread... ie- modding a PCIe slot OR finding a videocard.

Hope this helps

One solution is to use a PCIex4 to PCIex16 adapter. There are a lot of this type of riser card/cable.

One such one is: http://www.vecmar.com/StarTech.com_P...16R/p/S8771975

With this in place, you can just use a cheap PCIex16 graphics card.

Good find, I didn't think of that initially. I found the same one on Newegg here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-055-_-Product

Not too bad, I suppose.

OOPS, NM that link, not what you are looking for.

Here, do a google search for 'PCIe x4 to PCIe x16 adapter' and then click 'shopping'. You can find it almost anywhere including amazon and buy.com

The case is in ATX form, full tower wonder how much modding I would have to do in order to accommodate for that lowprofile style riser.

That black slot looks very much like a PCI-E x8 to me.

For such a adapter riser, here are 2 examples:
http://www.orbitmicro.com/global/arc...x8-p-8226.html
http://www.orbitmicro.com/global/pex...6-8-p-755.html

I wonder why it is so expensive in the US. Here is one in the UK selling £12 (~US$20).

Now that I know what to look for I will make good use of that old machine. I think an 8800GT can be found rather cheap no?

Thanks Windfire, mucho rep.
