8800gtx sli? or other?

So I have one hero 8800 gtx which has served me well for the last few years...

Since then, I've passed on the card down to my dad's pc... he is running a mildly oc'd i5-2500k so cpu is not an issue. He is mainly into video editing & photoshop but he does some gaming, mainly SC2, cstrike & he wants to get bf3 when it comes out...

SC2 runs pretty good, but I have to turn down some of the settings below ultra to keep it running 100% smooth. I have already oc'd the 8800gtx +14% so there isn't really any room left to push (still on air, w/c not an option).

Budget is very limited, around $130 ($15-$20 more if its absolutely necessary)... Question is, should I get another 8800gtx for sli? or should i spring for a better single card?

Also, have a oc'd 6870 on my personal rig, and I know I can run SC2 at max settings perfect on my 24" (1680x1050) and I'm planning on getting another 6870 for bf3.

Will 2x 8800gtx be significantly better than 1x 6870?

thanks for any help/suggestions. OCN

I don't think 2 8800GTX will match a 6870 at all tbh. They'd probably be a little weaker than a 6850, with less vram.

I'd be looking at selling the 8800 and buying a GTS450 or similar, or possibly the 6870 etc.
I think it's time to call the G92 as dead, finally.

he's on a little 19" (1440x900)...

should i just sell the 8800 & get him a 6870?

I'm happy with my 6870, but idk, is that the best option for the money?

Not sure, since 8800GTX's Are still an OK Card. If you get them In SLI, It should Run BF3 Flawlessly. Although, a HD 4870, Or a HD 4870 X2 Is a good way to go.

Since your father is only a light gamer, getting another 8800GTX for him to do SLI is certainly an option. As you said, it seems that he does not mind running games not at everything-maxed settings, 8800GTX SLI should be fine. I was still using 8800GTX SLI only about 6 months ago and I can testify that the pair ran like a GTX285 for all practical purposes.

To see how a GTX285 performs relative to a HD6870, here is one:
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/H...D_6870/29.html

So, 8800GTX SLI should be about 18% slower than a single HD6870. If the pair is overclocked, I suppose the gap would be narrower by a few more %.

While it is cheaper to buy another 8800GTX at a used price, you might have to upgrade your father's PSU. If so, this means $. If not, then getting a 2nd 8800GTX should be the cheapest way to go.

after a quick search looks like a used 4870 would be around the same price as a new 6870... would i be better off with 6870? or should i look into a 550?

i would really prefer to keep it under $160 if i can... newegg has some 550ti's for around $150... better than, less than, equal to a 6870?

Well for 1440x900 you don't really need a 6870 either considering it's almost = to a 5870. I'd probably look at a 768MB 460.

This one is 115 after rebate, and you can probably find some even cheaper if you wait for a sale.

hmm, that is tempting... do you think that 460 would be better value than the 6850/6870? btw, i would like to keep the door open for cf/sli for later down the road...

SEARCH HARDER BRO.
ebay is ur friend.
you can find used 4870s for less than 100 bucks if u know what ur doing.
hell, you could find a new 5770 for 120 too!
5770 = 4870 while using less power and running cooler.

550Ti cant come close to a 6870. 550Ti's compete with 6850's.
6870's compete with 560Ti's, and 560Ti wins a little bit. but with a small OC, the 6870 can beat a stock 560Ti.
