yep.
my mom can nearly max SC2 with opteron 170 OC'd to 2,4Ghz and a 4670 OC'd to 850Mhz core, at 1024x768.
so a 460 should tear thru SC2 like my zealots thru enemy marauders.

Why Not Get a GtX 460 1GB ?? Way better option no ? Much better upgrade path than overpaying for another 8800 card. Its crazy what people still pay on ebay for those things when cards for the same price are way more powerful. I personally wouldn't pay over $20 when you could get a gtx$275 or 280 for $60-90 etc etc... +an upgrade path for your pops eh ?

Gtx 460 1gb... def perfect for the price range you mentioned

EVGA 159.99... $119.99 after rebate

Zotac $149.99...$119. MIR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814500202

Obviously the 768's are cheaper but slower..

.. throw that aging 8800 to the curb..

Well, at least sell the 8800

The 8800GTX uses the older G80 core btw (the older one) .

Your best bet with those prices is a GTX 460 with rebate as OptimusPrime mentioned. Great performer and runs cool. Scales really well too so in the future SLI is an option. Single GPU cards are always better to have since it is less hassle. Stay away from the GTX 550's.

Thread Starter
thanks for the feedback guys ...

after hearing all the comments i think i'm gonna pull the trigger on the gtx460 1gb...

it will be new technology with fermi, dx11, etc. & i can always go sli down the road if a single 460 holds me back on bf3...

from everything i've seen/read it sounds like i will see a pretty nice improvement over my single oc'd 8800gtx

the main thing my dad cares about is playing sc2 fully maxed with no lag and it sounds like that wont be a problem

thanks again guys!

Personally I'd say get away from the old stuff and get either a 6790/6850/6870 depending on budget.

I have a 6790 in the mail for my GF's pc, looks like good bang for (limited) buck.

two 8800s will use a lot more power and make a lot more noise than a newer card.

Also, what if you get another 8800 and the current one dies?

I had 8800gtx sli up until 2 months ago and I thought they were great. For 130$ you could get 2 more 8800's and tri sli. There'd be a lot of heat and consume a lot of power so the smart thing would be to sell the 8800 and get something new. A 460 would be a good choice as others have mentioned, maybe a 560ti if can find a good deal and sell the 8800 for ~$60.
