I think the benefits of having a receiver are too great to go without one. You can hook other things up to the receiver and switch between them effortlessly. I enjoy having my PS3 and sig rig being hooked up to the same receiver. I switch between playing my PS3 and using my computer on the fly. The benefits of having a receiver go far beyond just sound quality.

I went from using the analog out of my MB playing on a decent 2.1 stereo to using my 3D card HDMI out to my 7.1 Onkyo receiver and I couldn't be happier. My receiver ties my sig rig, PS3, and HDTV into a single system. I love it.

I agree with you, that for an overall solution(movies, games, music, etc.), yours is the way to go! But the OP, as I understand, is aiming for a music system(2 or 2.1 system will suffice), and I don't see him getting a decent receiver + a pair of good speakers + subwoofer, with a budget of $300 dlls! Thats the reason why I suggested him the Sound Card + 2.1 active system. Maybe I'm just failing to not see a nice DIY sistem that fulfills the OP music needs at his budget!!

If you're going the soundcard route, I'd suggest the PCI version of the Xonar - the Essence ST over the STX. The ST has a better timing clock.

If you want audiophile quality via speakers, you won't get there on your budget.

A suggestion - you can opt for headphones to get into the audiophile league. Xonar Essence ST plus Grado SR80i plus FLAC done with EAC (Exact Audio Copy) or similar equals a good starting point.

OK gents, given the advice I've received from this thread I have made some considerations. I think I will hold off on making any major audiophile grade purchases until I can command the budget to realistically break into that segment. In the meantime I will purchase a combo that will put me miles ahead of what I'm currently using and help me cultivate my tastes for higher quality audio.

I think I will be purchasing

A.) Klipsch Promedia 2.1
and
B.) An Asus Xonar sound card.

Now my question is which sound card will help me get the most out of these Promedias for nice bassy music.

Heree are a couple I was looking at.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829132007

Any other suggestions in the price range of 120$ are appreciated. Or is the price difference between these and the Xonar ST worth it?

Thanks again

I actually have a Xonar DX with the Klipsch 2.1's currently due to size constraints. While it doesn't sound quite as nice as a full setup, it's definitely a nice improvement from my on board - $20 speakers. The other nice addition is that the Xonar will help a lot if you have decent headphones. I would also recommend looking on Craigslist for used stereo setups. I ended up getting my Klipsch's of their for a good price myself, and I'll probably look there when I'm looking for a stereo system after college.

It's completetly pointless to buy a soundcard and use it's digital output - all the processing will be done by the reciever regardless of where the digital signal comes from. So yes, in this case it would be completely unnecessary. There's probably not much difference in the DAC quality of a low end reciever and a low end sound card. However, once you move up the chain a high end sound card/external DAC will probably eclipse the reciever a fair bit. For this low of budget I would recommend 2 options:

1. HDMI > Receiver > Passive Speakers
2. Soundcard > Active speakers

At this price range, I think option 2 gets you farther. I think you'd be very happy with a Xonar and Promedia 2.1s and you'd manage to stay well within your budget.

I use a Dayton 3x1 soundbar, Polk PSW111, and Yamaha receiver. It's a bit over 300 but having a real micro sub right there, got bass? The soundbar fits perfect under my eyefinity array too. I can't use rears because 1, no walls, and 2, I have kids. Doh.

Those cards are more like for gaming and movies! I strongly suggest you to try to find a second hand Xonar Essence ST, you'll love it!

I am selling a great soundcard if you want. It is the same chipset as the Xonar STX. I agree that you should get a good 2.0/2.1 setup. Swan or a pair of nice active monitors.
