Quad Fire Setup, suggestions? how about this?

Four of these: MSI R6970 Lightning Radeon HD 6970 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

Overkill?, or would two non reference 6990s outperform them?

You'd have to be nuts to run quadfire on air. 2x6950 unlocked = 2x6970 = 1x6990.

no... 2x6950 unlocked is a little slower and a lot hotter than 2x6970... also, 1x6990 is a little bit slower than 2x6970... 4x6970 would be faster than 2x6990 with the proper cooling... on air, that it near impossible if you like your hearing ... also, what will you be doing that you even suspect that you need 4x6970?

Eyefinity multimonitor thinking 3x 1920x1080 or 3x 2500x1600. I want overkill, I need overkill , and yeah I figured i would have to water cool it, was just wondering what you guys thought of that card in general.

If yer gonna go water, there's no point in getting a lightning. Vrm temps will never get anywhere near danger levels to need the overkill vrm design so it makes the lightnings vrms wasted. Then on the flip side because the lightning has that stout vrm design its full custom, meaning it has zero fullcover support.

Get a reference or reference revised card, ie. any standard 6970x4 and 4 proper blocks.

not realy any quadfire benches but judgeing by the benches on overclock3d for crossfirex 6990 the quadfire 6970 would beat it obviously scaling comes into play but the 6970s would also OC a bit better im guessing with proper cooling

Back OT OP unless your benching or running eyefinity or super high rez there is no need for quadfire so it would be major overkill. Also the 6970 quadfire would beat out the 6990s

if your running a larger board the 6990s would allow for more cooling as you could space them better if you have the pci-e slots

a 6950 is not designed to run at 6970 volts and not handle the same heat... also, the 6990 has lower core and memory clocks than dual 6970s

for 3 30in monitors, that probably wouldn't be too much over kill to be honest

Did they flip the switch then clock the 6990s at the same clocks as the 6970s? When you flip the switch it only raises the core to 880, but the mem stays at 1250. And with the OC setting is it with the mem at 1250 or 6970 leels, 1375??

Anyways looks the same to me.
