Moving to a smartphone

Thread Starter
Currently I am running a LG env touch phone, while a nice feature phone I want to move to a smart phone. Initially I was waiting for my 2 year upgrade and planning on grabbing the Samsung Galaxy S2 Verizon variant when it comes out. However, now know that there will be significant data caps on Verizon past July 7th I was thinking of pushing forward the date of getting a smart phone to try and get grand fathered in. So I have a few questions.

1. Will I be grandfathered in for unlimited data if I start a plan before July 7th on Verizon and if so will it be for only one contract length (2 years) or for the foreseeable future?

2. What would be the best phone to get on Verizon by July 7th assuming no new phones out between now and then?

3. If I won't be grandfathered in or simply don't want to deal with Verizon's bull my backup plan would be to switch to Sprint and pay for a significant amount of the plan myself once I am off the Verizon family plan. If so what is the best phone to get? I love Google, like more than I should and so am very interested in the Samsung Nexus S since it is pure Google and will likely have the most support and I would hope it would get a relatively fast update to Ice cream sandwich. That being said it only has a single core processor and a 480x800 screen while the other phone I would consider would be the HTC Evo 3D has a dual core and a 540x960 screen. So if I switch to Sprint what would be the better phone? Please note I have no interest in 3D tech so unless I am blind sighted by the light of god that is glasses free 3d I will likely turn off the feature on the Evo 3D.

TL;DR
Whats the best Sprint phone?
Best Phones right now:
T-Mobile: HTC Sensation = I own this, pretty good, but sense slows it down, waiting for tmo gs2
Sprint: HTC EVO 3D = same as mine but with more RAM, pretty cool 3D screen, but it would get boring after a while
Verizon: DroidX2 = Feels amazing in the hand(like a premium device) but no FF Camera and 3G only
AT&T:Imported GSII(works on the very fast 3g(which they advertise as 4g) they have) = Best phone out right now, fastest and best screen by far

my favorite sprint phone is the one i own, the epic 4g. words cannot describe the motion on the screen. super amoled is the best

i haven't used evo 3d, but i love that HTC is completely pro hacking/jailbreaking.

phone specs can only say so much, the way the company sets up the phone, and the feel/speed say much more. like, the original evo seems very slow when i use my friend zaki's phone

Samsung is more open to hacking, they sent the CM team a free phone. In sharp contrast, HTC locked all their bootloaders so you cant even root anymore(until they unlock it)

My gf and her mother are in the process of switching to spring from Verizon. If you go in, they will give you a credit (press em for it if they don't) of about 250$$, which will cover your early termination of Verizon.

On the side of phones, while the Evo, and I'm sure the Evo-3d will be great, I myself would go with the Google nexus s (which is supposed to get a refresh around thanksgiving from what I am to believe).

After talking to Sprint (and Verizon) for my gf and her mother, I realized I saved them about 80dollars a month, ON TOP of the fact that the internet will be un-hindered. The bandwidth cap won't matter for them, but the money does. Possibly both will matter for you.

i like the nexus s, but there is one huge problem that will make me not buy one. they have fallen into the same hole as all iPhones, they don't have a memory card slot, so you have to purchase one based on how much you will use. now on a phone, i probably wouldn't use more than 16gb, but i want the ability to choose whether i will use it or not.

While I understand where you are coming from, its not necessary (with sprint). I have a 8gb card in my phone, but with the unlimited (actually unlimited) bandwidth, you don't need that much storage on your phone.

While I could understand it being a principal thing (that's not over my head tbh), I would implore anyone to take a serious look at the phone to decide if its what they want.

Otherwise, isn't the galaxy II coming to Sprint soon?

While I love the Evo, it seems much more like a phone all my friends get because its the 'best', a bit similar to Alienware or the iPhone (please don't hate me for the comparison).

Well the decision seems to be pretty split, I think I'll have to go into the Verizon store and talk to them, if they won't grandfather me in I'll simply wait until I am off contract and have my father cut the family plan down to 3 members. If they will I may get the Droid X2, LTE seems nice but it is rather expensive and in all likelihood I will have wifi access for the next 4 years of my life 90+% of the time. I will definitely try out all the available phones, especially if I decide on sprint. The one thing that worries me is that the nexus refresh would be in November, I would love to be able to have ice cream sandwich as soon as possible and like to stay up to date but that may be unreasonable, if the phone is only $500 I may simply save up the money and buy it anyways.
