[IGN] Breaking the MMOuld: Moving on from World of WarCraft

If you haven't been following the development of Guild Wars 2 or The Secret World, either because you hadn't previously heard of them, or because a Blizzard representative has quite literally injected you with a psychoactive chemical or sentient parasite to enforce your submission on a molecular level, now is a good time to educate yourself - or seek restorative medication.

I found his article interesting as it touches on how MMOs need to start evolving from the World of Warcraft era. I played WoW myself from BC through LK quitting off and on but still being a part of some of the most well known raiding guilds. A lot of things eventually put me off from continuing playing, as I'm sure many others have their own reasons for moving on.

Played from Vanilla to LK and quit before Cata. Wasn't really interesting anymore and have been out of MMO's until recently when I took up EVE which I must say is much more interesting.

That was a really great article, he really nailed it on the head. I'm so desperately waiting for a new MMO to come out so I can once again stop playing world of archaeology-craft. (It's all there really is to do aside from solo farming level 70 and 80 instances. )

Have to be honest though, I'm surprised TERA wasn't mentioned.

Sounds very interesting but not promising. There's not enough content in the world to satisfy the hardcore questing community to vary it enough. WoW has done a splendid job at keeping it alive but I'm afraid we will not see any evolution in the genre unless Blizzard themselves does it.

I really hope I'm wrong about the last bit, I'd love to see an underdog come up with a scheme that is truly (excuse the pun) game-changing.

This^

I think Blizzard has done well, and I personally enjoy the game still, although I don't play huge amounts like the haters that pretend its the games fault for ruining their social life etc.

However, I do want more options on MMORPG's, especially an underdog that responds better to the user's feedback.

It forgot option 3:

Don't care

I want a MMORPG with good graphics, good combat system, nice looking skill effects, grind-based or not as quest heavy or quest that are just grinding, and good customization.

WoW was good up to BC. After that it got dragged out and wasn't that fun anymore. I mean, you can only do that much in the game. Guild Wars 2 looks to be a very promising game though.

Nice article. However here is my gripe.

Everyone keeps saying GW2 and Secret World will have no grinding because either you level too fast or its based on a skill system. However this elliminiates QUEST grinding you still have to grind. Think of any Japanese MMO or any MMO with a skill system. While you dont grind for levels you have to grind to level your skills up. Want to be a bad ass with 2handers? Well you need to attack with them to gain skill. Switch to 1hander you have to do the same.

The games will bring something different to the table no doubt. But the overhyping by the merketing teams and the media as the WoW killer or so different than WoW is so much i think people will just be dissapointed in the end. (see Aion and Rift)

It really is going to be difficult to get rid of any type of grinding system, because these repetitive tasks are the ones that set apart you from another person. It will be quite interesting to see how developers improve upon the foundation that World of Warcraft has set for MMOs. With that said, I haven't played Aion or Rift as I didn't want a "WoW substitute", I want something truly different (Hopefully SWTOR does that for me to some extent). But I believe one of the biggest upsets I've seen was that Warhammer Online game. So many good friends of mine went out and bought that on release and tried to convince me to do the same. I tried being a broken record and tell them to wait a bit past release to see what other people felt about it. As I predicted, the game turned into a complete mess and no one I know plays it anymore.
