like i told Kvjavs above i am fully aware of the fact that the i3 is in a different league compared to the aging x3 and if those 2 processors are paired with the same GPU there's only ever going to be one winner.

But you see my question wasn't a straight up i3 vs x3 duel..it was the i3 + 6850 vs x3 + 6870/6950 and which pairing gives me more fps so now i hope you fully understand the uncertainty that's plaguing me.

Also which benchmarks are you referring to where the i3 performs better than quads in bfbc2 and f1? I couldn't find any for games like bfbc2 and gta4.

The i3 is what to go for. the older x3 may botle neck most hi end GPUS. if you look at the link that were posted above the i3 2100 comes out on top most times.

Built my brother a comp with the GTS 250 + i3 2100, runs sc2 @ max settings easy and crysis 2 at nearly max both @ 1080p ofc
I am using a AMD athlonx4 635... and well let me tell you I was very tempted to nick his chip wink.gif

so there's no point sticking a 6870/6950 with the x3 right? no amount of oc'ing of any use? Always thought at 1920 and above, cpu is hardly a factor as its mostly gpu oriented. Will the athlon hold back the 6870/6950 so much that an i3 with a 6850 will provide better frames at full hd?

If I was you I'd save an extra $50-80 bucks and get the i3 and 6950 or get the 2gb 6950 then flash the bios of the 6950 to a 6970 sit back and enjoy epicness but that would be a bit more expensive

I would opt for the x3 and 6950 as it will net better game performance for *most* games. Yes the i3 2100 will perform better on most applications, but a weaker gpu and a strong cpu won't beat a stronger gpu and a decent cpu in gaming.

At least with the x3, you have a chance to unlock to a Phenom II (L3 cache unlocked) or even a Phenom II x4 (extra core + cache unlocked). To what I have seen, most AthlonII chips reach up to 3.2-3.6ghz. I would also suggest looking into the PhenomII x2 555 as those can unlock to tri/quads very often. The x2 560 has a lesser chance, so avoid that. Also the PhenomIIs overclock up to 3.8ghz-4.2ghz.

It's really not THAT epic. Most people have only seen a 1-3% increase in performance due to the unlocking of the shaders. It's the overclocking of the core/mem clocks that really make the difference.

To OP: Do not flash a 6950 with a 6970 bios, you will run your vram with higher voltage and tighter timings, thus causing the death of your card. The safe way is to modify the existing bios of the 6950 and unlock the shaders.

ok..

doesn't the x3 unlock(if it does) to a athlon x4 which is a Propus die without any L3 cache to begin with?

My original plan was to get the phenom x2 555/560 in the hope that they unlock but i read somewhere that the chances of unlocking now has gone down quite a bit so was wary of the x2's.
