Rampage 3 Extreme Question

Hi I placed some of these questions in the information thread but only got one reply. So I have decided to make a new thread. If this is the wrong place I do appologise.

1) Must I replace the stock NB sink or will the standard one be ok. Have read that some say just change the thermal compound. If that is the case will arctic silver be ok to use on the sink?

2) How loud is the fan on the other sink? Can it be put on a fan header.

3) To this question I have come across various postings ranging from use only one or only 4 pins etc. Should I connect both 8 Pin connectors at the CPU if my PSU has the cables for it.

4) Are the 4 pin MB connectors required for 2 GTX580s and two other cards? I know you must connect the cards to their one power source. These are the additional power connectors.

5) Any idea why the LAN driver is so big? 183 MB?
Where can I get more updated one? Asus does not update their driver page that often in my experience

6) The pci16x speeds for three cards differs from the manual that comes with the board compared to the one one ASUS site.
MB Manual: x8 x8 x16
Site Manual: x16 x8 x8

Thanks once again guys

1) Up to you. I've read success stories about both putting the active and just replacing TIM. AS5 should be ok.

2)Fairly loud. I wouldn't go crazy though. So people seem to over exaggerate a lot. It's got it's own little power port.

3)I connected all 8. The way I see it, if your PSU has it, use it. Also, if you bought this board, you should be overclocking a ton. That's not to say that you actually might need the extra juice, but... meh why not.

4)I don't quite understand that one... QQ

5)Errrm... Do you need to update that? I've never had to... I check the Asus website... I'd say about once a month, and there's rarely even an update for anything o_o

6)I think the site is right, as usually the highest is first. I do know for a fact that they all run at x8. But yeah I think the site's right.

4) There are two additional 4 pin power connectors for the PCI Express lanes. Do I need to connect these if I am going to run 2 GTX 580 and two other cards.

5) Its probably no biggy. I just like to have the most updated drivers when I do a fressh install. And I know ASUS dont always update theres that often.

thanks for the other answers

4) I wouldn't know if you need to, but I would just for safety, to prevent your slots or your 24 pin from burning out.

5)Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I really hope I helped

I didn't even know the mb fan made noise. The question is do you think that little twerp fan would make a difference with 2 580s? No, not really.
