Radeon HD 6970 Grey Screen Crash?

Thread Starter
Have had this problem for a while now and I've been trying to fix it. My 6970 will crash to a grey screen, but the audio will continue going, from windows and from the game, or sometimes it will loop. It only happens in some games though which is weird. I've seen it happen in basically all source games I've tried (CS:S, GMod, HL:2, etc.), and Stepmania.

I can play BF:BC2 and DiRT 2, MW2 for long periods and it doesn't crash, but I can only muster 30 minutes max on the source games before it crashes. I'm running MemTest86 cause I think it may be my RAM. My last MOBO fried and it may have damaged my RAM in the process. What do you guys think?

Specs: 4GB DDR2 Ram
MSI-7380 Mobo
Intel Core 2 Duo e7200 processor (not overclocked) w/ Arctic Freezer Pro 7 HS

if I'm missing any important specs let me know

Standard first question: Have you tried updating drivers?

Memtest is a good idea though, especially with the previous motherboard and all.

Are you overclocking your 6970?
Sounds like the VRAM clocks are unstable to me.

In reply to the two posts above: I've played with the overdrive settings but otherwise no I haven't.

My drivers are on 11.5 CCC cause 11.6 doesn't work for me, CCC won't open when I have 11.6.

I ran memtest for about 4 hours today and it found no errors. I'm gonna run it tonight over night though, too.

GSOD is back? I remembered having this all the time with my newly bought HD5870 but a new driver release fixed it completely after a while.

if you ran memtest already then it prolly is the card. try bumping the voltage just a bit at stock clocks and see if it still happens. gsod is caused by the vram afaik but it wouldn't hurt to try

Hopefully its not the card.. **** lol. Idk how to overclock the card so could you give me a few tips on that? And what I'm gonna end up doing is probably buying a new board + RAM + PSU + CPU. If they go in and I still crash then it's time for a new card too. frown.gif
