Tritium is commonly used in gun sights as a light source. This isn't exactly plutonium leaking out here...
The local nuclear plant in Springfield VT leaked tritium a couple of times, and people routinely complain about the radioactive effects... despite being miles UP STREAM of the reactor. Just like with the Wifi and cell phones, people are paranoid, and if the media can scare up a story, they will do it. When Fukishima had issues it was all over the media "that our nuclear plant here in VT used the same design"... That was it. No conclusion to the story, no mention of our plant being hit with an earthquake or melting down, they just tried to connect the two, and let the viewer imply ours was in big time future danger.
Now there is a fight between the state and the company that owns the plant about it continuing to run. Sadly the yuppies here think that the plant can go away and the massive amount of power it generates will be replaced by ... well magic, or buy it from some place else and hope they can meet demand.
