Whats really going on ?

Thread Starter
I have looked at boinc stats over the last few months and have finally realized that its not just myself but 12 of the top 25 boinc producers of all time for Overclock.net, have turned off all of their machines, as of today looking at 6-20. I just want to know what the issues are ! we definately dont act like a TEAM therefore are we one ?

I have had some issues, I've asked certain moderators to help promote the rep system in Boinc because we do alot of work for Overclock.net and get zero recognition. in fact I could not sell a usb memory stick on this site if my life depended on it. The response i recieved was I dont believe in the rep system here at Overclock.net and one little click of a button doesnt mean anything to no response at all from two of the top moderators.

My next peave was a question brought up that Boincing gone bonkers did not really bring us closer together as a team, so is building a team the goal ? or is having the top 25 producers of Overclock.net boinc with a zero balance as of 6-20-2011 a success rate that we are willing to accept ?

I know that certain people will feel responsible and think this is an attack on them, that being the case you will miss the point, this could be a democracy not a dictatorship. we could really have a say in where we go as a TEAM. so accept some constructive criticism and lets get on with moving forward I would like to hear from the other that have turned their machines off also I am not the Alpha and Omega, im just in the lead for now.

I dont have any solutions I have a few questions though, if they are falling on deaf ears and Overclock.net is as good as its going to get then have the lead back DarkRyder im saving $150 in electricity every month while my machines collect dust.

As a new member, I didn't make the connection between your BOINC stats name and your overclock.net username.

Also have to remember that it's summer now. Warmer temperatures might prevent people from crunching.

" a zero balance as of 6-20-2011 a success rate that we are willing to accept ? " Like, what we supposed to do? Spank them or something? Fine them BOINC points? LOL!

"so accept some constructive criticism and lets get on with moving forward" Oh oh! Someone going to criticise me for running BOINC tasks? Someone going to criticise me for maybe not doing this or that as applies to tasks? It's MY computer, I do what I want with it and pay the electric bill and anyone even hints at something wrong with that is treading on a box of nitro... ready to get blown up any second. I'm on this team for fun, not to vote or be told what to do. I voluntarily help on monthly tasks and BGB stuff... because "I" feel like it, not because someone says I have to!

Some folks don't understand that there are times, especially with "TEAMS" where a democracy would hurt rather than help.

Try that vote idea in a league, on a racing team, olympic, or any other "TEAM" and see how it works! LOL! It flat doesn't work at all!

Teams by definition have a "Head Man", "Head Coach" or whatever and only a couple of designated specialists... but there is always one person in charge because that is the only way it can work well.

Sure, one can give idea's to the "boss", but to have a vote for every idea is out of the question and a waste of time.

OTOH, some folks are plain not happy unless the run things themselves, or not happy unless they get their way and that's too bad. Those folks usually end up going somewhere else.

For my vote, considering all the different applications, personal likes, equipment, electric bills, everything considered... I think it's best to keep things as simple as possible. We do the best we can do and even a single point per week contribution is helpful and appreciated.

Besides, there is no prize I can see for being #1 team... no money, no trophy, nothing but internet recognition and -frankly- that don't mean a whole lot to me.

Again, keep it simple, fun, wide open, and above all, worry about your own self and goals and equipment and not others. Participate in the level you want without fear of criticism or complaint!! (unless it's in jest of course)

And what real complaint can a person make anyways? Complain we don't have 1200 participants like SETI-Germany or something? LMAO!!!

And, this BOINC Team is pure voluntary! I certainly don't mind hearing idea's, I can choose to respond or not... but make it work or something mandatory and I'm outta here!

Of course, DarkRyder is the punching bag this month, so blame him for any troubles... LOL!

"I dont have any solutions I have a few questions though, if they are falling on deaf ears and Overclock.net is as good as its going to get then have the lead back DarkRyder im saving $150 in electricity every month while my machines collect dust. " Your way or the highway huh? Fine, that really helps that you have questions (what are they?) and that you insist they get answered or you quit... really... do what you want, don't make a big deal out of it cuz it ain't. You don't want to BOINC and blame it on someone else? LOL! It's your decision... You point racing someone or another team? Again, your decision. And guess what? Nobody gets to vote on what YOU do!! LOL!

JMHO

PS: Look at the "Total Credit, last months" graph and tell me something is wrong... pretty darn good looking if you ask me even with the turnover!

This was not written to be a flame thread Tex, I would appreciate it if you would not turn it into one, I have had daily rac higher than Overclock.nets rac right now. I have asked that the top 12 in the top 25 that have turned off their machines weigh in on this topic and I have asked what the issues are ? you are not one of these people so have some manors

Not meant to be a FLAME. It is "MY PERSONAL OPINION". Funny, maybe I'm to old to understand, but dadgummit, I don't see anything in your first post that "ASKS" the top 12 of 25 anything at all. Maybe I misread it, but sure isn't clear what you are trying to get at?

And your daily RAC means nothing to me personally, and don't take that as a flame or putdown! It just has nothing to do with anything.

Now, even this last post is a bit unclear to me. You are asking we "weigh in" on what? The fact they turned off their systems or perhaps moved to a different team or for some reason are not participating recently?

If I said:

"Hea all you BOINC'ers out there, why you turn off your machines? Wuzzup with that?"

Is that the kind of question you would like answered?

Because, in "MY OPINION", it don't matter how many points you can make per day or where you are in the team or world position or what someones RAC is.

PPD is 100% hardware dependent and to make people feel "small" or less important because they don't have (for whatever reason) 10 GTX590's on 5 i7-990x systems is wrong.

It is "MY OPINION" that the lowest RAC/PPD producer is just as important as the highest RAC/PPD producer. To immediately exclude others by only talking to the "TOP 25" is wrong IMHO!!!

The reason "I" think it is wrong is because there are tons more smaller PPD producers than there are bigger producers. If we could add 100 smaller PPD producers, that would be more benefit and more fun than adding 1 or 2 or more big PPD producers. Also, it's wrong because this is a "voluntary" team effort, not a "paid player" team. Everyone equal here IMHO.

I'm trying to exclude EGO in all this... also trying to exclude "hardware" in all this. I think we should all do what we can and every PPD producer is just as important to team as any other PPD producer and shouldn't be excluded from any discussion.

These are "MY" opinions, not intended to flame or degrade...

PS: I hate to talk about total team points vs. others because if we get that "Win at all costs" attitude, it will kill us. I am in a race with myself only and do other things to help and for fun... I know others have a strong competitive desire to "win", but that can be done also without stepping on other peoples toes! I am more of the opion that we should just invite as many as possible to "JUMP IN THE POOL" and see what happens!!! To take this "team" competition too seriously is to invite all the troubles in the world...

So, I don't know why folks turn off their machines... perhaps they can't afford $150/month extra electric bill anymore... but they are still and always will be welcome in my book. In fact, I'm sure I don't need to know the "why" of it... maybe it's personal... none of my business... someone unemployed or sic or something...

PPS: I got an idea! Send a PM to everyone you wish to talk to and ask them why they turn off machines! Easy to do!

My two 4870x2s are gone... I'm left with a dying 8800GTS, a dying 9800GX2 and a GeForce210.
The 210 is in a linux computer, haven't been able to get that one crunching BOINC...

Agreed. Let's just keep this on the topic of why we are losing BOINCers and credits.

BOINCstats reports that team OCN has a RAC of 6,752,739.31808 (so many unnecessary decimal places lol). Only one time you have had a credit day higher than the team current RAC:
2010-10-11 15:21:1614,748,667
Your second best day was:
2011-03-03 15:32:326,215,806

You're asking for top 12 to weigh in. You may have to wait a while. Remember, you went AWOL on us for about 2 months.

Also, key words there, as of today. Doesn't mean that they have stopped crunching fully. I can vouch for maybe some of them. Chimp Challenge came, and we lost a great deal of power despite having the BOINC Pentathlon (our first time in it). As well, it is Summer and with air conditioning using a lot of power, some BOINCers would rather not run their rigs in an effort to cut down on heat in their homes and/or electricity costs. Plus, where I live, they have this "peak time" "mid peak" "off peak" electricity rates. peak time is more expensive than mid peak which is more expensive than off peak.

Well...your post count is a bit on the low side. I know that I had at least 200 posts before i got 25 reps.

Another thing, I've read both posts, and I want to know, did you leave because of issues with OCN itself, or was it because the electricity costs were high?

You need to remember that there is a FaT(Foldathon) going on this minute. So most OCNers are jumping on to that, as a team. Check back in, in a couple days when the FaT is over, and I bet the numbers jump back up.

But I also have to say, I have slowed my Crunch/Folding down a good bit. Because of the heat.

Heat is trying to kill me, I need to move to Alaska....
