In need of an upgrade

Hey my fellow OCNers, I've been off this website for a while and seriously fell off as far as computer hardware literacy. My problem is I'm going to college in August and majoring in Computer Science and I would like a computer that I can use all four years of me being in college, I'm planning on staying until I get my masters too. The current build I have is in my sig but I would really appreciate it if someone could throw some ideas out there and we could work together to find me the perfect computer. I know I want to go quad core this time, possibly the whole nine yards under a budget. I'm not sure of the budget now because my second job starts in 3 weeks so anything is a possibility right now. Thanks!

Intel's i5-2500k has been the go-to enthusiast processor for a while now. You'd want a P67/Z68 motherboard to go with it if you go that route. Your video card choice would depend on how much gaming you do or maybe even what kind of programming you intend to get into. There's a huge selection available in any case. Another thing to consider is getting a SSD (*wink wink*).

core i5 2500k, good z68 motherboard, 4 gb 1600cl9 ddr3, and a graphics card of your choosing combined with your old parts will do just fine for quite a while (maybe with more ram, another gpu and an ssd along the way)

I don't really know what computer science but if it's about softwares and all, you might want to get an i7 2600K since some of them will probably be optimized for lots of cores. If some softwares can use it, a Nvidia video card for CUDA but again, I might be completely wrong since I have no idea what computer science is...

You'll have to change your motherboard if you want a CPU and RAM upgrade that will be worth while. I would change to this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131699

And a CPU to go with it:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103894

And also some new RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231444

The graphics card could also be updated quite a bit. Would an AMD graphics card be out of the question for you to try? Here's one that I would suggest:

These would be a few things that you could start with that would make a major difference

t-ramp : What are the benefits of getting an SSD ?

OutOfBalanceOX : Which parts do you think I will be able to recycle from my current sig?

Also I saw this on Newegg today, is it a good deal? I've heard great things about this case

EDIT: Snowmen : Computer Science is basically computer programming

ActionHobo : The previous poster striked some interest, what is special about nVidia's CUDA as far as programming compared to what AMD has to offer?

SSDs don't have moving parts, so they're much more responsive than traditional platter drives. However, they're much more expensive as well.

Regarding the Antec 300, it's a decent case but lacking feature-wise. Cooler Master's HAF 912 is a bit more modern in that respect.

If you want to recycle some current parts, you're probably limited to things like the hard drive and DVD drive. You might be able to use the PSU as well depending on what you get, but I would probably upgrade that too. Of course if you wanted you could likely use your video card for a while if you don't feel like it needs upgraded quite yet. Basically a full-out upgrade might be the best option to keep up with whatever new CPU you get.

hard drive power supple case os monitor, possibly your cpu cooler if you can get 1155 mounts.

Actionhobo: at this point in time it is completely foolish to suggest and AMD rig

Also the three hundred is nice and falls below $50 quite often. The Antec 100 is also very nice and has pretty much the same features (plus 8 pci slots)

I thought this was the AMD board.

t-ramp : I really like that case, I'm going to save it because I'll probably get that one. I'm going to go with a full upgrade this time around, I want everything new. But do you think the rear and front fan that comes with the case will do any justice or should I buy new fans for the whole case? I want a huge top fan so air cooling can be quiet yet effective.

OutOfBalanceOX : I'm just going to do a full upgrade.

EDIT
Ferrari9608 : I know, lol I intended it to be but if another company offers better options that suit my needs then hey, why not. I'm sure a mod will move it soon.
