I Want To Overclock But My Bios Wont Allow It!

Thread Starter
I have an AMD Athlon II X4 620 @2.6GHz. I went to the BIOS to see what I could do about overclocking it. I had no luck there. Everything having to do with the CPU is grayed out. I want to get it to at least 3.0GHz but I have no idea how to do it now. I have an HP Pavilion Desktop with the HP BIOS. Can anyone help me with this? Any software I can use to overclock my CPU?

OEM motherboards rarely allow overclocking, you could see if you can find an aftermarket am2+ board.

So with my current motherboard I wouldn't be able to do any kind of overclocking at all?

On my old VAIO all I had to do was unplug it and remove the little battery in it for a bit. When I would boot it back up, the full bios was available including overclocking options. After a reboot it would revert back though. Maybe give that a shot?

Except that would reset the CMOS which is something I don't want to do..................hmm........................

Why not ?
A wrong overclock could lead you to reset the CMOS anyways.

EDIT : lol
Pegatron Violet

You need an Asus/Gigabyte motherboard to overclock decently.
you can do a bios mod if your up for it.
Go search here if you can find a mod for your board http://bios-mods.com/
If you cant find one then go post a request in the forum and hope someone does it

You don't want to bios mod your crap motherboard sir.
It will either explode or melt.

The vRegs are probably 1+1 at most, which is badddd.

You can try using clockgen. I've used that to OC my HP Pavillion's Q6700 up from 2.67 Ghz to 3.0Ghz. It works surprisingly well. Its just a little tedious to find the right PLL that works with your motherboard.

Open up CPU-z, Download clockgen, then click PLL setup. Then also click on PLL control. You'd have to go through each clock generator until you find one that works with your bios. Personally, the IDT CV174C generator works, but thats probably different for you since you have an AMD chip as well as an AM2 board.

But keep going through those generators and clicking "read clocks" after each selection. You might find a generator that gives you the right settings. You'd know if it was right when the options you see in the pll control window match up with the left-hand bottom of CPU-z. I've never dealt with AMD before, so YMMV.

If you do get a correct working generator, use that pll control window and slide the first slider slowly to the right. Once you hit the maximum or go over, your computer will just lock up and freeze. Then reboot and repeat the process, but this time moving your slider less.

With that motherboard I would concider Downclocking instead of Overclocking ...

Seriously ... It's taking a huge risk.
If MSI board can explode due to lack of VRM's, prepare to face a painful rig death.
