Fallout 3 New game crash.

Thread Starter
Ive tried over and over to start a new game in Fallout 3, yet each time I answer yes to start a new game, it crashes on the loading screen! This is a VERY irritating thing, I get an error message saying that it just stopped working, the it closes. This also happens on my other laptop running Windows XP. Anybody have a solution?

Unstable engine is unstable, yet again. If you have any mods running, turn them off (or delete them). If you don't, or it doesn't work, you might need to do a reinstall. Fiddling about with the settings can fix it sometimes (I know changing draw distance fixed some problems for me on that engine).

1. Disable mods if you have any, one at a time, trial and error.
2. If you have the Unofficial patch and DLC's, deactivate the modules of the unofficial patch for the deactivated DLC.
3. Deactivate autosaves at rest, wait, and travel. Reportedly it helps some people.
4. As a last resort, delete Fallout.ini and Falloutprefs.ini located at .../Documents/My Games/Fallout 3/ Note that these files will be generated with default values, so all game options will be reset to default.

Hope it helps.

I have no mods, I tried deleting those two files and they both didnt work... The only one I didnt try was deactivating the modules for my DLCs... How do I do that?

You can uncheck them from the Data Files screen of the Launcher. I would post a screenshot but I've uninstalled the game a while ago. If a DLC is deactivated on the "data files" screen, delete the Unofficial Patch module with that DLC's name. e.g if The Pitt is unchecked, uncheck the Unofficial Patch - The Pitt (it might not be the exact name, but you'll understand when you see it). If you enable UOP - The Pitt without The Pitt itself (same for all other DLC, not just The Pitt), it crashes the game at launch.

And obviously this only works if you have the Unofficial Patch and the DLC's...

Okay, so ALL my DLCs are unchecked, where are the Unofficial Patches?

Full reinstall? But after you uninstall it, delete the folder as well, a lot of stuff is left over after you uninstall it.
