asus rampage extreme (mk1) and Corsair vengeance cl8

post #1 of 2

Hi!
Specs;
Asus rampage extreme (first one) (Stock cooling)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
4x 4GB Vengeance™ — 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 Memory Kit (CMZ8GX3M2A1600C8)
Radeon HD 6950 (flashed to 70)
MiST 500W PSU
Soundblaster x-fi Fat4l1ty

I'm fresh as a baby when it comes to overclocking, and after landing me a sweet deal on 4x Corsair Vengeance 4 GB cl8 ram's, I found out that my motherboard refuses to run it natively.

So here's my problem. WHAT TO DO?! hehe.
I've tried X.M.P profile, but then it just locks on "DET. DRAM".
I've tried "Memory level up", on all sorts of voltages (only adjusted DRAM voltage though) But it crashes at any random time. (artifacts (read: abstract art) and snow on speakers.
Posted a similar post on the corsair forums, and they said that the mobo needed OC for it to work at 1600 MHz.

Also found an "Asus rampage extreme overclocking guide" On the forums here, but since my setup is nothing like the one at the first post, i'm afraid to try setting the numbers to what it says.

So, anyone out here who could help a poor newb out? Thanks.

To start, I would just start slowly raising the fsb by maybe 10 or 20 mhz at a time, and run a quick test of Prime 95 while monitoring temperatures with hwmonitor. If it seems stable for a little while then reboot, and raise the fsb some more, and repeat. If it becomes unstable(crashes) then increase vccore a little bit. just be sure to watch the temps. once you find something good, lower the fsb by 10, then run prime 95 for at least 8 hours, monitoring temperatures. if it is stable after 8 hours and the temps are below 65-70ish degrees C then you have a safe overclock!
