Which HD4890 is the BEST in OC?

Thread Starter
Welcome OCN, greetings from Poland

Currently I'm using Palit HD4850 512MB DDR3 which was very cheap (~$40) but is quite resistant to OC
GPU is stable at 685MHz (625MHz stock) at any voltage I can choose from RBE. It works stable at 1.158V (max voltage in RBE for this card) and at 0.89V (min volt.). That's strange, isn't? And the temps are ofc lower when @0,89V
The problem is memory - everyting above 1000MHz (2GHz DDR) is totally unstable and finishes with driver restart or BSOD. The PCB is non-referent as it is the shortest HD4850 from Palit. The GPU is cooled by AC Accelero TT Pro, so temps are not the problem. I don't want to volt-mod the card, so I have to change it to upgrade the framerates in games.

I love AMD/ATI since having my first build so I'll stick to them as long as I can

The question in: which one from the HD4890 cards has the best potential in OC?

I don't need 2GB of memory because I use 1360x768 resolution, but 512MB is not enough nowadays, I think. Don't need any good/silent stock cooling as I have great aftermarket GPU cooler. It would be great if the card I'm looking for has the native DVI + HDMI (both at the same time) output. PSU is not a problem - I'm going to buy XFX Core unit soon.
Why HD4890? It is the most powerful single-core card from the HD4XXX series and it's very cheap now (used $70+) and I can sell my HD4850 with stock cooler for ~$50

I will be thankful for any help
Cheers!

In my experience they went as follows (note I've owned all of these):

XFX XXX (6+8 pin power)
Sapphire Toxic
Diamond XOC

I have another XOC arriving in a few days to test. I sure love these cards

And what about Sappire Atomic?

I'm going to search for them at one of the most popular polish e-markets (similar to ebay) but I don't have to hurry, just want to buy the best one - my old HD4850 is still running perfect, just want to upgrade. I'm also going to buy a used one without a warranty as I want to change the cooler to AC TT Pro. And the prices of new ones are quite big, I would like to buy something from 5-series instead of new 4890. That's why I'm looking for a cheap used HD4890.
Isn't the HD4890 a "youngtimer" of GPUs? :> not new but decent and powerful

The Atomic and XFX XXX Black edition were supposedly the best as they came clocked at 1000 core.

The Atomic was always sold out whenever it did come in stock (as was the Toxic I have, but I got lucky with finding one from a small company). Also the XFX XXX Black Edition came with the blower type of heatsink, so it suffered from high temps, but aftermarket cooling/WC negated that problem.

Toxics are the second best from the Atomics, though they don't clock much higher than stock: 960mhz/1050mhz (4200mhz effective). Makes me sad that two Toxics with EK waterblocks sold for only $150shipped in ebay.

Yeah, I would like to reach 1GHz on core, just because it looks great
Do they have both HDMI & DVI outputs?
Will my AC TT Pro fit on any of the HD4890 or it may be incompatible with some non-reference cards?
Can anyone post an image with the XFX XXX unit so I can recognize it easily when looking for them on auctions?

Yeah, I managed to get a hold of my Toxic for $200 when I got it... and that was one hell of a steal. It did 1030/1200 on air and 1066/1220 on water. I saw those two Toxics going for so cheap and wanted to jump all over them... beastly cards.

It'll be harder to find one of the good XFX cards because they produced so many different revisions of the 4890, 90% of which you shouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

This is what the Black Edition looked like:

http://xtreview.com/addcomment-id-95...ion-1-Ghz.html

Here was my 4890 XXX:

http://www.overclock.net/overclock-n...go-bointn.html

If you get an XFX card, make sure of three things. First, it must have a 6+8 power plug setup. Second, it needs to have a black PCB. And third, it must have the stock blower style heatsink!
