Computer won't post after new heatsink install

Thread Starter
Ok, I'm a little perplexed here. I've built about 5 computers in the last year with zero problems, but I can't figure out what I did wrong with this.

I recently bought one of the rebranded Cooler Master TX3's (The Rocketfish one) to put on the system in my sig. Got it today, and popped my old stock heatsink off.

I grabbed some coffee filters, carefully wiped the old paste off, and put a rice sized dab of Arctic Silver Ceramique on the processor. I put a couple TINY dabs of paste on the heatsink itself, and spread them back and forth over the bottom with a credit card. (normally I don't do this, but this cooler doesn't have a "smooth" bottom like some do, it's got small ridges where the copper pipes are, so I figured it might be a good idea).

I put it on with relatively little fuss, didn't drop it or anything and I didn't have to put any extreme pressure on the clip to get it to stay. It clips on tightly enough that it doesn't move around, however. Plugged in the cpu fan, and turned it on.

It booted up, loaded Windows, and I installed an Adobe update. I was just about to open Speedfan to check the temps when the whole thing froze. I turned it off, checked the CPU fan connection, and then turned it back on.

Now, the HDD's, all the fans, lights, etc. come on but it won't post. Nothing comes up on the monitor, and I don't get any mobo beeps.

I'm kind of scared, I didn't unplug any cables during the whole process other then the cpu fan, and as far as I know, I didn't do anything to damage the CPU or mobo. There's plenty of fans, etc in the case and the heatsink IS mounted, so I have a hard time believing that I completely cooked the CPU in that little time.

Any good places to start? I want my baby back...

Check your video card connection, you may have bumped it loose.

I opened it up, checked all the connections (SATA, all the mobo power cables, made sure the RAM and GPU were seated tightly) and pulled the CMOS battery out for a good 5 minutes. The fan on the heatsink is spinning, and I can't have installed the cable the wrong way, since it only goes on one way. Still won't post, or even give me any beeps.

Is it toast? I don't know why it would've booted up and let me do things on the desktop if RAM/GPU were loose.

Thanks for all the tips so far though!

Does it sound like the fans are running at 100%?
hmm...maybe a short of some sort? See if the backplate is touching anything on the back of the mobo.

Try using the old heat sink to see if it will boot just fine.

If you didn't use any alcohol or arcticlean then your system is overheating. My brother tried doing what you did and got idle temps of 70c. After I come in and clean everything up with arcticlean, it idles at 25c. You NEED some sort of cleaner, straight wiping doesn't work.

Secondly, after cleaning you need ONE small bb sized blob on the centre of the CPU. Mount cooler to spread, nothing else required. Make sure the push pins are also all attached properly.

Sounds like there is a short somewhere. Try taking the motherboard out of the case and see if it boots.

You might also have dripped some as5 on the motherboard or somewhere else on accident.
