My MSI NGTX580 Lightning is 772mhz out of box

Thread Starter
EDIT: The cards shipped with the bios switches in the "LN2" position instead of "Original". Switching them back and reinstalling Nvidia drivers fixed it. Thanks go to juano, the super genius!

From the reviews and even from MSI's own website product sheet, I expected my MSI NGTX580 Lightning cards would be 832mhz out of the box.

But, according to GPU-z, they are 772mhz.

I am still able to get upwards of 890ish mhz with Afterburner without tweaking voltage, but I am still curious to know what's going on.

Is this a GPUz issue? Silicon lottery? Bad cards?

Cheers

No, there's no problem as long as the card is stable at the clocks speeds they claim. It just happens sometimes, happened with one of my 580 SCs as well.

Default BIOS. If you insist on having it 832 contact tech support and have them send you a BIOS for 832.

Isn't it a bit careless on MSI's part to include a stock BIOS on a product that sells for a slight premium, because it is overclocked?

Perhaps innocently, this costumer has kinda been ripped off, no?

Eh, crap happens. As long as tech support takes care of it like Alex said it shouldn't be an issue...

What did the retailers advert state the default clocks to be?

EDIT:

Detailed on MSI site-

"The product picture may differ from the actual product. Only for your reference.
The specifications may differ from areas. Please check with your local dealers. "

I know it's as simple as flashing the BIOS, or simply keep the overclock @ 832mhz. The components that make the card special are still there, just not the BIOS.

I just pointed it was a small slip up, I'm not exactly bringing down the fire on MSI

No. No to everything you wrote lol. There is not a slight premium because it is over clocked, there is a premium because of the much better PCB, Phases, power delivery, and general components used. Who cares what stock clocks are at when they buy this enthusiast card. MSI Afterburner even has a set on boot for someone to lazy/ignorant to flash a new bios.

Sometimes it isn't flashed properly at the factory. If the consumer insists on a 832 out of box and isn't willing to flash, 1) why the heck is that person buying a Lightning???, and 2) can always do RMA exchange.

It's like buying a car that is supposed to be brand new, 200hp but due to some unknown reason it's less than that. Stuff happens in manufacturing.
