My MSI NGTX580 Lightning is 772mhz out of box - Page 3

Your temps are fine but you don't want them much higher than that, the thermal limit for the GF110 in your 580 is 97C so for me personally I would look to keep them less than about 87C just for peace of mind. You might also want to consider slightly lower voltage, you may find that you can hit 900Mhz with a little less than 100mV overvolt which would be much cooler and is a more reasonable 24/7 OC, with two of those bad boys you really don't need to push for every last MHz. You have plenty of power and the extra few MHz is really just a mental thing of seeing how far you can go, really not necessary.

What the other poster mentioned about the switches is this, check on the top edge of the card there will be a two position switch with one of it's positions outlined in white (the position toward the front of the case, away from the rear I/O) if it's not in that position then flip it into that position. You can verify if it's in the wrong position by looking at MSI afterburner and seeing if it says 580 CBB FIX which means that switch is in the wrong position. These switches are fairly easy to flip when handling the card or even just removing it from the anti-static bag. But make sure that you only change that one switch on the top of the card that is out in the open, there are 3-4 more switches on the back that are covered by yellow film that will void the warranty if broken so leave those alone. No warranty voiding or anything else to be scared about by flipping the top uncovered switch.

If that BIOS switch is in the correct position already and you at only at 772 then as alex said it's either a BIOS flash or RMA to solve that.

Why is it necessary to bios flash? Can't you just overclock with afterburner?

Thanks juano.

On the temps, i am running at 900MHz currently with a 60 mV overvolt. I figured thats good enough. Or would you tweak that further? I dont think ill be running these at 940+ unless my friend beats my 3dmark score again

I did see the dipswitches on the board. They are switched to the rear IO that says L2n or something. The other position is labeled as "original". I never moved them from how they shipped.

Cheers and thanks

I got the same overclock on mine. I pushed it further for a while (90mV, 940) but it was crashing while folding.

My temps never exceed 65C, I had to tweak the fan speed though.

Ok well than as I mentioned that is in the incorrect position, that's why you are stock at 772 instead of 832 switch them to original, the position outlined in white, that is where they should be, you aren't using liquid nitrogen now are you? You may not have moved them on purpose but as I mentioned they are very easy to flip and not notice it, like perhaps when it was removed from the antistatic bag. Regardless it doesn't matter how they got there, they are in the wrong position and you ought to put them in the correct position, the one away from the cards I/O and outlined in white. Nothing to worry about from needing to switch them although it will likely make you reinstall the cards drivers because it will appear as a new card to the machine in that correct position. Just make sure to leave the tinier switches covered by yellow film on the back of the card alone, those are the one that void the warranty if moved or film broken.

Ok, I turned off the PC, switched them both to "original", and booted up. My PC wouldn't recognize either card. According to the Nvidia control panel, I had no cards installed and was unable to configure anything. Windows resolution came up at 800x600, etc.

So i switched themem back to "LN2" and all is well.

Here's a picture of the switch. That black switch was set to LN2 for both cards when I took them out of the box. Im positive I did not switch them to LN2 from Original. The switch in the pic below is set to Original because I was took the pic after switching them (as recommended).

890 at stock volts? Nice card! Who cares about stock speed you'll be OCing it anyways, right?

Yep as I mentioned ou may have to reinstall drivers because the machine will think it's a new card connected when in the other BIOS. I'm just trying to help you here so if you don't feel comfortable doing what I'm suggesting that's fine but I am 100% positive that what I'm telling you is correct and is the cause of your 772Mhz speeds, as well as other changes that you don't want or need done to your card. I'm not positive of all the changes the LN2 BIOS makes so I won't make assumptions, but I can tell you that the BIOS you are currently using was not designed for air cooling. I am also 100% positive that they cards should be in the "original" position rather than the LN2 position (doesn't that kinda make sense? I mean you aren't using liquid nitrogen cooling and the one I'm telling you to put it to is named original, kinda seems like that would be the original position don't you think?). I'm also 100% positive that as I mentioned these switches should be in the original position from the factory and that the switches are very easy to mistakenly hit like from removing them from the antistatic bag (ask me how I know ).

It's not my intention to come off aggressive or hostile with this message, just to make it clear that I am positive of the things I'm telling you (if I weren't I would say things like "I think") and that I'm only telling you them to try and help you. If you don't feel like taking my advice that's fine, no hard feelings, just trying to help.

This is true to an extent but you don't want to be using a BIOS in a way it was not intended to be used in if you don't know all the changes it makes, it would really suck to find out that BIOS does something that would be fine for LN2 but could possibly damage a card on air cooling. Again I don't want to engage in conjecture, but that's is why I'm adamant about trying to help the OP get his card set up correctly because nobody in this thread so far has enough information to be able to say that him running the LN2 BIOS on air is safe.

Indeed. As I said, I'm just curious. Trying to educate myself a bit on GPU overclocking as its all brand new to me.

I trust you 100% You seem like you know exactly what you're talking about. I just like to ask a lot of questions. Sorry, juano! Im off to switch em again and reinstall drivers.

Im sorry if i gave you the impression I didnt trust you or value your advice. I do very much!
