Just so everybody knows, you can now get an ASUS 970 chipset AM3+ board on Newegg now. For all you budget enthusiasts! Bulldozer is plowing on through.

Let me know if this is okay to post under news. Move if needed.

It's been on Superbiiz for awhile, and it's cheaper there. I've already been recommending it.

sativa you should be fine. OC-ing the CPU should remove any last potential bottlenecks.

I am looking at building a system for my father and am currently leaning towards the ASUS M5A97 EVO as a starting point, with a 955 or 965 CPU. He will never try any type of OCing or anything of the sort. I know a low-end system like the RatRod in my sig would do everything that he would ever need, BUT he wants to be "up to date" with a new computer, so I am recommending that he get an AM3+ board so he will be able to upgrade the CPU in a few years if he wants and keep the Mobo. Is this correct reasoning? Most of the scuttlebut indicates that the new generation AMD CPU's like the Bulldozer will use the AM3+.

A question I have regarding the ASUS M5A97 EVO is what memory should be used? The QVL from ASUS is VERY limited, and the ones listed do not seem to be top performers. Does anybody have any information about the memory options, and what do you think about the ASUS M5A97 EVO ? Would YOU choose this board for YOUR father?

The (vanilla) ASUS M5A97 is out on Newegg, difference being it uses a slightly lower end 4+2 VRM (still heatsinked and fine for most 125W applications i.e. Phenom II x4 - Phenom II x6 still ideally should have more phase count). At the excellent $95 + $7 shipping price point, it is something I will be recommending frequently.

Jagged_Steel, the plain M5A97 might be better for you if your dad is not going to OC.

QVLs are always usually very limited; with the rise of the integrated memory controller, there's really not much need to trust anything the motherboard manufacturers say about particular motherboard memory support. Get a good kit for inexpensive, it will likely be fine even if not on the QVL.

Thanks for the advice xd. I am going to go with the M5A97 EVO as it should be double-bulletproof with any 4 core (which is what I am going to put in it now) and do an adequate job on a 6 and the soon to come 8-cores whereas I am thinking the slimmed down 97 might not be up to the task of the latter. I also discovered that Frys has these ASUS boards at within a $ or two of NewEgg right here in Phoenix. I can put together the whole machine from there for maybe a just few bucks more than egg, so subtracting shipping it is pretty much a wash to go ahead and buy the stuff here locally. I also like the idea of being able to drive over and get a new part if I get a DOA. I was worried about that when I ordered my rig from Egg a few weeks ago, but I got lucky and everything worked flawlessly.

so...i guess no sli on this board huh? It's actually a very good looking motherboard at an amazing price... I wanted two gtx 580's on it..but...looks like if I purchase this I'll have to stick with a single card..me thinks a gtx 590?

Does this have the efi bio as well? considering the crosshair v does

It does have the mouse bios.

This is what the ASUS page says about GPU support:

"CrossFireX Support
Flexible Multi-GPU solutions, Your Weapon of Choice!
ATI's CrossFireX™ boosts image quality along with rendering speed, eliminating the need to scale down screen resolution to get high quality images. CrossFireX™ allows higher antialiasing, anisotropic filtering, shading and texture settings. Adjust your display configurations, experiment with the 3D settings, and check the effects with a real-time 3D-rendered previews within ATI Catalyst™ Control Center."

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3Plus/M5A97_EVO#specifications

What exactly does this mean? Dual ATI cards? Or no dual cards possible at all? It does say multiple GPU solutions".
Here is a review I found. Not many out for this board yet I guess.

it doesn't matter what the site says, the second pcie is only electrically wired for 4x bandwidth. CFX/SLI would not work properly.

Yes, the M5A99X Evo supports SLI at 8x/8x, and single cards at 16x.

First off, hi! New guy here, but I've been reading and using this forum for info for a while.

Anyhow, I've got the regular base model of the M5A97 (I know, I should have sprung for the EVO), but when I installed my video card (HIS IceQX HD6790 Turbo...once again, should have gotten the 6850, considering...) into the blue slot, I had issues with the card not pushing out any blue. It was weird...everything had this strange brownish/orangeish tint. I moved the card to the black slot, and everything's fine...but now finding all this out, this means now that my card is running 4x?

Also, this is my first build since high school (early 00's...). Since then, I was on a submarine, so I had laptops and never really bothered with desktops. I'm having issues overclocking with the UEFI. It's all foreign to me...I've been out for so long. Are there any guides or anything (Google is less than helpful in these kinds of specific inquiries-I just get M5A97 ads and reviews)? I'm really apprehensive about going in there and just changing stuff. I *really* can't afford to let smoke out, since I was only able to afford this build because I had a student loan, and this was my motivation to take on that loan.
I can overclock the balls off of it with AMD Overdrive, but I do know enough to know that software overclocking is useless. Besides, it's wicked unstable and I bluescreen nearly every time I do something like Prime95 or transcode videos in Vuze. The latter is more my idea of an ideal stress test for me, since currently it's just about the only thing I do that stresses this machine that much. Hell, I can declock it to 800MHz and it'll handle all of my light stuff with no issues, and it'll stay at ambient temp then. But, I'm going off on tangents here...
