GPU fan pin out

Thread Starter
ok my new GPU cooler arrived but its fan is powered by molex/mobo its a whats the pin out for ATI`s 4pin fans

i have isolated the black & red i need to know what one reports fan speed

cables in this order
left to right or right to left depends on how you look at it

{Black-Red-Yellow-Blue}

this is so the GPU is powering it that way there are no cables running every ware again

edit the card is a HD 4850

The gpu might not be able to supply the current for the new fan.

1 Ground - Black
2 12 V - Yellow
3 RPM - Green
4 Control - Blue

the nwe fan runs at same volts and amps stock 12v-0.29A
new 12v-0.29A

I dont think your going be able to adjust the speed the fan header the gpu gives 12v constant and a control not a variation on the voltage that the 3 pin fan needs.

the new fan is only 3 pin any way one of the pins is to report fan speed thats

thats the one i need to find the other to control the fan is negligible

yes but to lower the rpm of the fan, you have to lower the voltage, and the gpu does not do that it gives 12v all the time.

You will therefore need a 4 pin PWM fan to control the RPM. http://www.cclonline.com/product/39391/8-72767002036-4/Chassis-Case-Fans/Arctic-Cooling-Arctic-F8-Pro-PWM-Case-Fan/CLR0275/

it ok i worked it out Blue is control speed - yellow is RPM monitoring = the one i wanted

the fan is only able to report speed to monitor RPM thats what sensor i was trying to connect it up id doesn't not have speed control like the standard HS&F

i wanted to wire it into the stock 4 pin socket so i dont need to use the molex/mobo connection + this way i can see the fans speed

i have done what was needed now this thread can be closed or deleted

ok well first off the connection on the fan that is attached to my new GPU cooler was a mobo connector so not compatable with the GPU fan connection

here are the pics of what i have done

picture.php?albumid=4785&pictureid=25797
picture.php?albumid=4785&pictureid=25798
picture.php?albumid=4785&pictureid=25796

now the new GPU cooler is powered from the GPU fan connector insted of a mobo-to molex power converter
