The Classified benefits from an overengineered PCB and robust power delivery capabilities characteristic of record-breaking cards, but an unlucky 580 Classified can happen just as a lucky 580 Vanilla can.

Advanced overclocking potential is limited by the least common denominator. The Classified, Lightning and Matrix series cards all seek to eliminate the VRMs, power delivery and PCB as possible limiting factors but they do nothing for the specific GPU chip itself. If it hits the advertised clocks and is stable, then it's good to sell -- hence why the stock clocks on the record-breaking cards are curiously quite conservative.

Thank you for the information. I wasn't sure how similar it was to CPUs. It makes sense though, as a GPU + the PCB it sits on isn't much different than a CPU on a motherboard and I know first-hand how a quality motherboard can turn a modestly overclockable CPU into a very clocked CPU. I suppose that I got relatively lucky on my 580 SC then. smile.gif

I'll try and find a lower overclock too just to be safe

Thats perfect leave it alone. Imo no need to drop it, temps are great. Nice OC.

Thank-you everyone for your help smile.gif

Im loving my GTX580. I now have settled for the 2 overclocks below, both stable

HIGHEST OVERCLOCK
1.125v
950mhz core
1900mhz shader
2153mhz memory
Idle temp 28c
Max temp 65c

MIDRANGE OVERCLOCK
1.088v
900mhz core
1800mhz shader
2004mhz memory
Idle temp 28c
Max temp 64c

I will use the Highest overclock for GPU intensive games and the Midrange overclock for less demanding games such as consol ports.

The rest of the time the GPU will be running at defalt settings.

The difference between 900mhz core and 950mhz core is about 8fps - 10fps cant quite believe it. In DIRT3 and F1 2011 Benchmarks im getting minimum fps 79, average 89

Can you just answer me one more question? Im running games at x8 MSAA, do i need to go any higher? There is a QSAA x16 or something like that but it currupts quite a few games (for example DIRT3 just shows a green screen when this is selected) Which is better?

does anyone know if I should be putting thermal pads on the things that say R125 on my 580 when I put the waterblock on?

My heatkiller didn't. I think I saw one block that did but most others do not. Don't worry about then just follow the instructions of your block. They don't have pads on them on a reference card.

I've been toying with my single 580 card, trying to squeeze the most out of it and the best I can do is P7587 as I've posted before. That's at 1900/950/2153 @1.150V It also passes every Heaven benchmark I throw at it, runs BF3 like a champ, and it doesn't have any artifacts in furry or tessy tests for at least an hour.

Yet, I get NAN MACHINE_UNSTABLE in Folding@Home on the -advmethods WUs. So far, I've had to go all the way down to P7469 running 1863/932/2113 @ 1.125V and I'm still not entirely certain that it's going to be rock-solid on the tougher WUs in Core_15 and I'll probably spend the next two days testing that.

Is anyone else here folding on a non-lightning/classified 580 here, and if so, what sorts of clocks are you stable at and what sorts of 3DMark11 Performance scores do you end up with?

I have a reference 580 that will run 950 on the core with 1.150V all day long in heaven, crysis, any game, etc but will not pass 3dm11 to save its life. It wont even pass at 900, regardless of voltage. I dont understand.
My highest 3dm11 score was in the P7300 range with 880 on the core, so your score looks to be on track.

I currently have my MSI Twin Frozr II (which is reference design covered with a Arctic cooling accelero extreme plus II which came with the additional heatsinks for VRM's and memory chips).

Now i have it running @ 910/1820/2048 at 1.113V.

1) Is this voltage OK for a reference designed GTX 580 ? If not, is it safe for a reference design with the arctic cooling accelero extreme plus II? or is the voltage simply too high, not because of the OK vrm temps, but because of the bad quality/less power phases on a reference design, in comparison with a GTX 580 lightning as an example?

2) Afterburner shows 1.113V but GPU-Z only shows 1.100V, what to believe??

Yeah, heaven, 3dmark, every game and bench I can throw at it, it passes at 950 but it fails in folding at 950 core with any voltage or memory timing after anywhere from ten minutes to four hours. I just folded for the last 10 hours at 931.5 / 1863 / 2121 @ 1.113V with no errors. I'm big on stability, so I think that I'll leave it dialed down slightly. Besides, if it's folding stable, that means it's less likely to throw artifacts.

That voltage is perfectly acceptable even on a reference card and at your clocks. GPU-Z is the more precise and accurate measurement of real-time clock speeds and voltages. The other programs often report the maximum value in the setting and not the actual VDDC as measured on the board. GPU-Z is reporting the actual measured value.

By the way, you may want to think about increasing the memory to 2106 or 2113 to be more proportional the shader/core clocks that you have.

evga gtx 580 classified:
900 Core, 1800 Shader, 2106 Memory, 1.100V

evga gtx 580 superclocked:
797 Core, 1594 Shader, 2025 Memory, 1.063V

nvidia gtx 580 reference:
772 Core, 1544 Shader, 2000 Memory, 1.000V

If you plot out those points, your card should be at 2106 to match the 900 that the classifieds use, or 2113 to reflect slightly higher core and also 1/2 the amount of video RAM meaning that you can time it a bit more aggressively. I hope that helps. If it's unstable at that, then you could back down to the Classified 900/1800/2106/1.100V range and it will probably bench equally as well as yours does at the current settings.

Thats weird my vanilla evga can do 3dmark11 up to 980 but its only game stable at 950. 3dmark at 990 the score started going backwards.
