Getting frustrated with my 580. I had it running at 900 with 1.1v for weeks on end now, decide to play metro 2033 and it crashes.
I cant get it to crash using ANY benchmark at 900/ 1.1v
Im so frustrated I just feel like running it stock. Sick of having crashes and just want to play my games. I have come to the conclusion that my 580 is a ****ty overclocker

You still got some voltage headroom. Why not kick it up a notch. Metro is a very demanding game, maybe the others weren't really pushing it.

I should. Its just so funny how it can be stable in so many other games, then I pick up a game that I havn't played for a while and it crashes.
I guess the main thing that makes me feel uneasy is that 3dm11 will pass every time at 880, but at 900 it will only pass once in a while, regardless of how much I crank the voltage up. Thats what makes me believe that my 580 is getting weak or has always sucked.

How does a 120mhz overclock "suck"? I think your expectations are too high. Overclocking is always luck of the draw, which you can increase with getting a card with better components (ie msi lightning, dc2 asus). Are you using a reference GTX 580? If so, your overclock is far higher than average -- I know many EVGA users that can't get past 850 wink.gif

I suppose it doesn't suck, but for being under water, and having almost no limit to voltage, I would think it could go higher, lots of people run well into the 900 range.

You probably just got unlucky in Metro. It happens. You might be able to game for another month before you crash again. If you're truly concerned about stability, then the best thing you can do to test your GPU OC stability (if you're on an nvidia card) is to run 10 -advmethods folding WUs (projects 7620, 7621, 7622) as I haven't found anything tougher on a Fermi card than those WUs.

3DMark11 is easier to pass than Heaven. Heaven is easier to pass than FurMark. FurMark is easier to pass than Folding@Home Core_15 -advmethods. I haven't found anything harder on a Fermi GPU than folding -advmethods.

EDIT: On a side note, if you've exceeded 1.150V for sustained periods of time there's always the chance that you've caused some degredation, regardless of how low your temperatures were. Out of curiosity, what is your memory clocked at?  The classifieds (and I think lightnings) that are clocked at 900 core/1800 shader use a 2106 memory clock. I'm fairly certain that both use 1.110V. Being significantly over or under that memory frequency can cause some issues, from what I've found.

I've got a "stable" OC on my 580 for 3DMark11 at 962 / 1934 / 2156 @1.150V that dies in Heaven 25% of the time. (It's 3Dmark11 stable, but unstable in Heaven and any high-stress game like BF3 or Dirt3.)

I've got a "stable" OC on my 580 in Heaven/BF3/Dirt3/Skyrim (all on maxed out settings) at 950 / 1900 / 2156 @1.15V that will error out with Error 52 NAN in Folding@Home Core_15 on a -advmethods project within 5 to 10 frames, 100% of the time.

I had what I thought was "stable" at 918 / 1836 / 2106 @ 1.15V (or any voltage between 1.100 and 1.150) that will finish those -advmethods WUs 90% of the time but still has errors. (Note that it took me a full two weeks of playing with this OC at several voltages that this OC was not truly stable, even though it's rock-solid for gaming.)

Dialing it down to 900/1800/2106 @ 1.113V (which is evga "Classified" clocks with a 0.013V bump on the voltage) and it's finally 24/7 folding stable. I've finished at least 30 of those WUs now and not had a single error I'd bet my left arm that it's going to be stable in every game there is at that clock. Nothing stresses a NVidia GPU OverClock like folding -advmethods on the GPU client.)

Those "lots of people" gaming at higher clocks might be like me, where their cards are mostly error free and they think that they're stable but in reality, when a perfect storm of Murphy's Law bites the card all at once, you get a driver crash.

Thanks for the info. Folding did pop into my mind when testing for stability, and I have folded on this card for a long while, but that was last winter.
I tried to get F@H up and running on it last night but it wouldn't grab a work unit. - That a whole nother story/issue

Those random crashes are what I am trying to avoid. As much as I love to OC, sometimes I just want to have the piece of mind that whatever OC I have is 110% stable, regardless. There is nothing I hate more than a random crash.

Degradation is my biggest fear. I guess I will have to see how the card behaves over the weekend.
I believe you when you say that Heaven is harder to pass than 3dmark11, but that has just not been my experience. I can run heaven for hours, without any artifacts, but not pass heaven with the same clocks and voltages.
Now that dreams of a high OC on this card have been shattered I may just put it back on air to simplify things. That is another decision I have gone back and forth on many times.

If its already on water isn't it more work to take it out and put the cooler back on. I can't argue with you though, I spent a lot of money (like we all did) to get a 580 and WC it. If 900 was all I could do at max voltage I would be bummed. With my card 3dmark is not a good stability test. I can pass it at 980. actually I passed at 990 but the score dropped way down. I was stoked my card could do 980 only to find out its only game stable at 950. Which I'm happy with, mine is a vanilla EVGA. I know we all have a number it our head we hope to hit. But for a base clock of 772, 900 is pretty nice.

BTW whats your memory at. I feel like messing with it does more harm then good, if its OC'd try dropping to stock and see if you still get crashes.

Got lucky on my local craigs and picked up a 580 for 220$ biggrin.gif Threw her in and after just a little tweaking I got this:

http://3dmark.com/3dm11/2448775

vcore 1.150
Clock 920mhz
Shader 1840mhz
Mem clock: 2053mhz

Max load on test 70c

P7731

That's pretty average, right?
