No if your psu has enough pci connectors then you use those.

One would think that all the 8-pin and 6-pin pci-e power connections would be sufficient for a card to run. But actually it seems that you have to plug in those molex connections too if you are going 2/3-way sli or quad for that matter. And also if you are going to overclock. Otherwise 24-pin motherboard power connector will pull extra power in order to run those pci-e lanes. This sounds lame on asus's part that it might need extra juice for pci-e. But from all that I've read and experienced myself with R3E, I feel that those molex connectors are required. I got better stability while I was on gtx 480 soc sli. And same goes for my current tri-sli setup.

^ this, if the motherboard has the molex ez-plugs, they should probably be used for multi gpu. A few people burned the 24 pin ATX on the classified mobos before they introduced those.

My asus rampage 3 extreme has 2 of them. One located right above the top pci-e slot and the other one located at the bottom of the board.. Should i be using both for just 2x sli?? i guess it wouldnt hurt but just wanted your 2 opinions...

Thanks

Yes. You should use both. According to my understanding of the board, the one near 1st slot powers pcie slots 1 and 2 while one at the bottom of the board powers slots 3 and 4. So as you are using slots 1 and 3, you need to connect both of them.

No one can really say if it will OC as good. But the Lightning does have some of if not the best vrms on a 580. So your chances are better normally with one of them. How does you current card clock? If its a good clocker especially like 1ghz plus you may be in for a let down. Clocks aren't always the same in sli regardless.

This is just my .02. But the gigabyte is a good card. If it was me and thats all I cound find I'd be ok with it.
