Hi! I have an EVGA GTX 580 DS overclocked to 950mhz( Core clock) and an Intel Core2Quad Q8300 (OC to 3.1 GHz). In BF3 the FPS gets as low as 30 on Ultra (1920x1080) and in Diablo 3 during lots of animations the fps even gets down to 20 (for a couple of seconds). Is the CPU bottlenecking the 580 ?

Sounds about right for BF3, not too sure about Diablo. Have you noticed at all if your GPU usage is less that 100% when gaming? - this would be the sign of a CPU bottleneck.

Do you have your CPU overclocked?

Thanks. The CPU is overclcoked to 3.1GHz. So it is normal for BF3 on the 580 to go down to 30 fps on ultra?

oh yeah, it sometimes dips into the low 60 high 50s for me in some really intense areas and i have 2 580s

have you checked what your gpu usage is like while gaming? you can download msi afterburner to monitor this - it even has an onscreen display that you can set up

I played some Diablo and noticed that when the game starts lagging the GPU Usage goes down (usually goes down to 20-30%) while otherwise its at 60% - 90%. So I'm guessing that when the GPU Usage goes down and I get lag it's because of the cpu right ? And is the normal GPU Usage normal to be 60-90 or should it be higher ?

unless you have vsync on, it should be at like ~99% with occasional small dips

That's true if his CPU was powerful enough to constantly feed his GPU with data, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Modstorm I would say that it's very likely a CPU bottleneck.

Thanks smile.gif After some more gameplay I noticed that my GPU usage averages around 65-70% so getting a better cpu (Ivy Bridge) will give me around 35 - 40 % improvement right ?
