Bought an extra Gainward 580 couple months ago. Never read the bios numbers. Couldn't work out why they'd lag in BF3 if I didn't force the same settings with Afterburner.
Only using two ATM with P8Z68. All three are going on a Rampage Extreme with an 3930K next week....my current P8Z68 Deluxe/Gen3 would only run 4x for a third card, so didn't put it in. Saved up for something worthy...
Thought they were supposed to just do whatever the lowest clocked card did. Not my Gainwards.
So tonight I thoughtlessly force flashed the newer one to my original bios. Rebooted. No NVIDIA card present. Holy Cow. Don't panic... redface.gif
Finally twigged that one bios was 70.10.17.00.01 and that newer card was 70.10.48.00.01 and that bios of mine just didn't work for it.
Force flashed it back with settings that matched my two originals....783/2010 rather than 805/2010. They used to have different voltages too.
All good now. Now at least they work together without having to use AB. thumb.gif
Does anyone know what the bios version numbers mean? The 48 seems to indicate some sort of hardware revision....

Is this BIOS setting only for Gainward cards? Or for any GTX580? (mine is ECS and I'm having the problem described above)

You force flashed it and the newer bios does not work?
or
You have two cards with different bios revision numbers?

No no, I'm just asking out of curiosity. Never flahsed the BIOS of my ECS GTX580.

Actually I never found another bios for this card on ECS site. Then I found your post on the last page, where you said you updated the BIOS of your Gainward GTX580 card.

Is there a 'general' BIOS for the GTX580s? Or this is specific for the Gainward ones?
I'm still wondering what you meant by "having the problem described above"?

Wasn't really an update as the different bios was incompatible. Don't think graphics cards get bios updates like motherboards do. Had to flash back, and then bios edit to get matching clocks and voltages. Turned out my third card, bought with water block fitted, was actually a Golden Sample. Seller never mentioned it.

Your bios is revision 70.10.12.00.01 in GPUZ?

EDIT: LOL. That looks like it might match for my Gainward Golden Sample bios, except the GS bios is set for 805/2100 - 70.10.12.00.00 while yours is 772/2004? Can't guarantee it though. Still haven't found anything that nails the meaning of each part of the revision string.

If you wanted to permanently change stock clocks I'd say look up bios editing. If you just want to experiment with them, then download Afterburner and enable voltage control in settings.

Go back one page and look for my post :-)

Actually I should replace "above" for "in page 301" biggrin.gif

My question is very simple and noob: is there a 'general' BIOS for the GTX580s? (because you mentioned flashing your card with a new BIOS).
They are all based on the Nvidia reference design, if that's what you mean by "general" bios. Different manufacturers can change that to suit variations, like different gpu ram etc, and non-reference designs.

What I did was purely in pursuit of performance, to get two ever so slightly different cards to work well together. Not as an update.

Looking back at your post, it does look like a hardware problem. I doubt that reflashing bios would help. If your temps are low, then it may not be worth refreshing thermal compound/thermal pads. That's about all you could do.

hi , i am new here and need some help pls .

i have 4 - gtx 580

1 evga 580
1 msi 580
2 sparkle 580

on a sr2 .

i want to oc the gpus / to get the max scores in 3d mark 11 / vantage / and benchmarks specifically ...the max i can do in afterburner if all goes well is roughly 920 on all gpus . that is if i max out the
volages in after burner .

i see that ppl have done 1ghz on there gpus --i dont mind doing even 950 on them . but need some help .

can i flash the gpus so that they run at 950 on the core .

if some one can tell me how to do this ....i never flashed a gpu before ...hope it does not brick the gpus or some thing .

where do i get a decent bios from which is stable and has been tried and tested by others .

how do i flash the gpus with the new flash ---
post #3018 of 3436
Are they all installed?
Using GPUZ, clicking on each one in the drop down box bottom left, what are the bios version numbers? Are they the same or different?

For example, I have one 70.10.48.00.01 and two 70.10.17.01 They are all Gainward GTX580 cards, but something is different about card 1.
Their bios will not cross flash and work. Yours may be different. Maybe cross flash would work for you (to make them all the same), but maybe not.

I gave all of mine the same settings, editing the 70.10.48.00.01 to read the same as the other bios. Then reflashed the card with the edited bios.

I did not make them all read 950 though. I made them all read 783/2010, but with max voltage of 1.213v
I only jack it up for benchmarks. Games I play at stock. I don't use more than 1.16v so far.

It is not flashing that makes them able to run these cores. You could flash them to a default 950 for example, but if 950 was not stable with afterburner, it won't become stable just because the bios is set to use that as default. Lifting the volts can raise your max core speed a bit, but the risk is our own.

I find 3DMark11 can tolerate higher clocks than Unigine Heaven. I find BF3 and GTA4 the least OC tolerant games that I play. The real life test for what I play is whether BF3 will not crash using it.

Bios editing...

This package has how-to guides in it

It uses a boot drive for NVflash, but NVflash these days can also be used in Windows using Command Prompt as an Administrator.

I managed P18937 with 1000/2080 and 1.16v That's Tri-SLI 580.

Got my Lightning XE 3GB few days ago. It's default core-clock is 832. I don't see much gain going 900, which is easy to obtain. I need at least 940-950. What is usually enough voltage for that speed and can all cards achieve that? Is Lightning XE better overclocker since it has much better components on it's PCB? Are chips hand-picked?

I am currently @940MHz, 1,1V, and it is not stable. Not sure how safe it is to go much beyond that.

Tnx

I'm running my EVGA GTX 580 SC @ 975 core and 2200mhz memory with 1.1v

And temps at load stay around 40c under water.

What's the highest you can overclock with these cards?
