No two cards are perfectly identical. Your memory would OC to its own limit. Personally, I OC the core first to whatever it does that gets the best score for what I'm benching at the time. After that I up memory to whatever it can comfortably run at. (Different benchmarks tolerate different overclocks.) If you are OCing for gaming, then OC to the game that crashes your OC most.

If benching, I find the highest OC does not necessarily get you the highest score. I've run into that one a few times.

Hello everyone, I have an MSI gtx 580 twiin Frozr 2, and have been trying to overclock it for a while now. But I keep getting minor issues, I did made a thread in the PSU section, but I was eventually redirected here as it seems more of a GPU probleme then a PSU.
Here is a link to the thread: http://www.overclock.net/t/1373362/psu-not-powerful-enough

For those who don't want to read the whole thing, basically, if I to use furmark with a clock higher then 850mhz, the computer instantly resets (instant shutdown). If I set my computer to stock speed (cpu and GPU), and only up the voltage of my card to 1100mv, the display drivers crash.

So far I've manage to get an OC of 880Mhz with 1088mv. max temperature in heaven/3d mark fire strike is around 70*C, yet when I run Kombuster i get a massive 94*C. (fan runs at max speed 85% when temps are higher then 75*C)

here is a link to my build: http://www.overclock.net/t/1373362/psu-not-powerful-enough

So my questions are:

- Any idea why my computer does a hard reset?

- What can I do to get cooler temperatures?

last thing, my computer did do a hard reset once when playing tomb raider with tresFX on and 3d vision

Hardly ever use Kombustor or Furmark ..Seems to me like they mainly test how hot you can get your GPU, and not that good a stability test.

You have tried redoing the TIM and thermal pads? Your case has extra fans to get warm air out?

Regarding yr other post:
Aria requires sign in.
Photobucket requires sign in.
Your vid doesn't show case or card... you have a pic you can post here?

I know those are extreme cases that will never actually matter, but I was curious

It is best to just never use furmark. It has no use, except to see how hot a card can get. It isn't a benchmark that gets compared, it doesn't test stability, it doesn't do anything except see how much power a card can pull & how hot it can get.

So I've just sorted the signature out, thanks for the link.

Nope I've never touched the TIM and thermal pads. No idea how to remove the cooler from the card and what TIM/termal pads I should get.

I've got my NZXT phantom case maxed out with fans (7).

whole lot of tiny screws, plus the tim sticks, so can take a bit of pressure to separate... usually find a guide with google, maybe even a youtube vid...2mm heatpads I think..guys in delidded thread are TIM fanatics...Prolimateck pk-1, MX4, MX2 and PrimoChill come to mind...Shin-Etsu....

840 on air cooling...not sure how far u can go there, i use water cooling (custom loop), but I've got three and a 1500W PSU....can't go wrong with overkill. I max out between 960 and 1005 depending which drivers I'm using... newer drivers give better scores at lower clocks..don't even want to go high...crash..but it's results that count.

I just want a stable clock for gaming, 880/900 would be awesome.
That 94℃ was with clock speed at 880.
At stock speed I only get 78℃

My fans only goes at 85%, would flashing the card to make them go at 100% would damage the card?

Your problem is almost certainly due to the combination of overclock and core voltage i.e. raising core voltage would help. However your temps with vcore at 1088mv indicate you really don't want to go any higher.

In order to get my GTX580 (ASIC 80%) to 900MHz I need vcore at 1100mv but I am under water so temps are in check. Whilst you remain on air I think your best way forward is to find an overclock/core voltage balance that allows you to do everything with a max temp of say 85C (thermal threshold is 93-97C, after reaching this temp the GPU will dial back the clocks until the temp drops a to safe level) and forget about aiming for a specific figure. I've always found 3DMark11 a good test for stability as the heat generated is more in line with games i.e. real world and it will cause windows to throw a TDR error when things are not stable. The way I go about finding the overclock sweet spot is raise core voltage from stock with 20MHz steps until I get stability issues with 3DMark11 then I raise core voltage until it is stable again whilst keeping a close eye on temps. I then fine tune with smaller steps. After the core is sorted I then raise memory until I see artefacts and then dial back slightly until they disappear.

Also I agree with others Furmark has no use except to see how hot a card can get, it is really stressing your graphics card for little or no benefit when it comes to assessing stability.

Getting heat out of the case is an easy win. Redoing the TIM will be harder and may not yield any improvement.

I've stopped using fur mark and kombuster furry tessy.
I keep running 3D mark fire strike extrem on loops. So far so good, temperatures are around 67/72℃ with volts are 1110mv and clock at 900mhz. Should I try to push it more? Is there a big difference with overclocking the memory?
How long should I run loops for before I decide to increase the memory?

Core gets you more than memory.

I have had PCs (air cooled) brought to me artifacting, after being run hot for long periods gaming. This can dry out the TIM. In those situations redoing the TIM has worked wonders.

Should I \oc the memory then? and by how much mhz should I increase and test for how long?

Just ran 3Dmark Firestrike extrem on a loop for 2hours, with 1113mv/900mhz and the average temperature was 65°C with max temp 72°C.

I've just ran the tomb raider benchmark in a loop for 40 min on ultimate (tresFX on) and the maximum temperature was 78°C.

Can I say that is a good OC? should I try pushing the card more?
