Measured my GTX 580 SLI power draw numbers, FYI!

NOTE: THIS TEST WAS CONDUCTED PRIOR TO MY INSTALLATION OF ALL WATER COOLING COMPONENTS NOW NOTED IN MY SIGNATURE. COOLING AT THE TIME OF TESTING INCLUDED:
3 x 200mm Cooler Master red LED fans;
1 x 230mm Cooler Master red LED fan;
2 x 120mm Scythe S-Flex G fans;
1 x 140mm Cooler Master exhaust fan;
Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler;
Stock reference ASUS GTX 580 fan shrouds on both GPUs.




Hey friends,

I remember when I first built the rig in my signature, my first ever PC build, one of the biggest quagmires I had to overcome was deciding on a PSU- 12v rails, 5v rails, single rails, ripples, amps, 80+, 85+ gold, silver, Corsair, Antec, Enermax, budget, enthusiast, modular, non modular, OMG LESS THAN 1KW WILL MELT YOUR MOBO WITH OC AND SLI LOL and on and on it went!

I'm sure you've all been there. Today, in the hopes of helping out the guys who, like me, hounded Google and these forums in search of "Is X PSU enough to run Y setup?", I'm posting the results of a couple hours of testing my rig with a wattage meter. I was really surprised by the results, as the consensus among most of us who aren't electrical engineers or PSU gurus like Phaedrus is that if you plan on OCing, if you plan on running multiple GPUs and a higher end rig, you're going to need a flux capacitor to run your PC. Not so. Here's the results:

METHOD: At each stage of testing I used a Blue Planet Electric Energy Meter to measure total system power draw. The unit plugs directly into the wall socket (North American 120v) and the PSU plugs into it. Each stage of testing lasted 15 minutes. At each stage I recorded the average and maximum wattage readings.

Stage 1
System State: PSU power switch on, system off
Average Draw: 11W
Max Draw: 13W
Notes: It stayed steady at 9-10W, with random spikes to 11W and 13W.

Stage 2
System State: Power on; Boot sequence
Average Draw: 212W
Max Draw: 232W
Notes: This stage did not last 15 minutes, but rather the readings between the point at which I hit the power button and the Windows 7 desktop. I did this 3 times.

Stage 3
System State: Desktop idle; MSI Afterburner, Avast! only two programs in toolbar running.
Average Draw: 198W
Max Draw: 207W
Notes: 15 minutes of completely idle desktop.

Stage 4
System State: Prime 95 blend test run
Average Draw: 292W
Max Draw: 298W
Notes: Prime 95, 15 minutes, nothing else running.

Stage 5
System State: OCCT benchmark run
Average Draw: 589W
Max Draw: 592W
Notes: OCCT was set to: 1hr, 1920 x 1200, Shader complexity 8, fullscreen with error check. MSI Afterburner also running, reading an average of about 60% usage on both GPUs.

Stage 6
System State: Crysis built-in GPU Benchmark
Average Draw: 656W
Max Draw: 687W
Notes: In-game settings (which control the GPU's settings) were all set to VERY HIGH, @ 1920 x 1200 and 16xQ antialiasing. MSI Afterburner reading 89-99% usage on both GPUS throughout.

Stage 7
System State: Prime 95 & OCCT simultaneous test
Average Draw: 700W
Max Draw: 711W
Notes: MSI Afterburner also running, and fan profile set up 85% (MAX) for the duration of the test to really crank up the power draw.

So, as you can see, the actual power a system will draw is often much less than most people think, and also much less than most online PSU calculators will recommend as a minimum.
The most important lesson to take from this is that overkilling too much on a PSU so that at average draw, doing whatever it is you have your PC to do, like gaming or graphical work is too much below or above 60-75% sweet spot of PSU efficiency (where mine falls almost perfectly) will hinder your performance, as far as stress on components goes and stability. So for my setup, I'd definitely recommend my Enermax MODU87+ 900W, and if you wanted to throw in a sound card and/or another GTX 580 for tri sli, 1000 or 1100W would be pretty much perfect.

Would the 3GB 580's change that at all?

My next test will be an hour or so long run of Crysis, still all at Very High, 16xQ AA, and I'll post the numbers. I checked it out after running Witcher 2 and Shogun 2, and it averages around about 660W. Real-world gaming even at ridiculous settings with wild OC's on everything won't stress it as much as Prime95 and OCCT running together, it seems.

Nice test! We should group a bunch of these together for a quick reference.

I tested my 1055T and 4 GTX 560Ti rig and at full load it was pulling 900-925W at the wall.

1055t@ 3.8Ghz : Running BOINC projects on all 6 cores.

4x GTX 560 Ti 1000MHz/1.050v : Running 4 Folding@Home projects.
