c-50 vs e-350

Thread Starter
Any idea how much I would be giving up if I went with the c-50 over the e-350?

Also any idea if there are any non glossy c-50 netbooks in the 200$ range?

Ideally 11.6" or 12"

Edit:

Most intensive task I will be doing on this is programming, most likely with visual studio ultimate.

Just not sure what exactly to expect. I see visual studio ultimate has a minimum requirement of 1.6 ghz processor... vs dual core 2 ghz can make things just a little hazy as to real world performance.

Also.. there doesn't seem to be any options outside of glossy screen.. Being one who has stuck to matte.. I'm wondering how big of a pita that may be..

I'm also considering a Netbook, and have been looking at the new AMD CPU's too.

For the price in the $200 - $300 you are in C-50 territory. From what I have read it performs more or less like a Dual Core Atom N550 at 1.5 Ghz, sometimes wins, sometimes loses, sometimes it ties.

The E-350 is more aimed to compete with the Ultra Low Voltage models from Intel.

I'm not sure how well either one will perform with the tasks you want though. But having these comparisons, maybe you can ask someone who has tried programming on a Atom Dual Core Netbook and/or on an ULV notebook.

In either case, if you get a Netbook with a C-50, you should upgrade the RAM to 2GB (I think most E-350 models already come with 2GB of RAM), that will help with the performance.

As to the screens, laptop manufacturers use glossy screens to disguise the lack of quality of the screen. If the screen is very good, they can do with a matte one, if it's not so good, the glossy layer helps get you better blacks, whites, more saturated colors, etc.

A good example of this is the Asus EEE netbook line. They all have glossy screens, except for the cheapest one, which is matte.

Actually, a glossy screen can actually help when you are outside, as long as no direct light is facing the screen.

Wikipedia explains the pros and cons here.

Cheers!

whoever claims that ANY glossy screen ever helps is probably more likely than not full of crap.

Most experiences I have with glossy are shall we say... headache driven.

Either way I'm fairly positive the e350 would be enough just question the c-50

Regardless of why they do it.. I question how anyone can use a glossy screen.. they give me headaches.. or generally speaking have in the past.

I would like to think that situation has gotten better but, I somehow doubt it.

I may have to suck it up if I want a netbook though x.x

I didn't say it helped just like that. I said it helped with the lower quality panels they use on netbooks. Read what I wrote properly. I assumed he knew what the cons were as he wasn't very inclined towards these; I merely stated why they used them, and that in the netbook scene, it actually makes some sense. Of course it reflects. But I also had problems with a matte screen on a netbook, so all in all it may end up being more about screen size too.

There are different types of glossy screens; some are better than others at not reflecting so much. Either way, everybody knows what the downsides are; the problem is, a netbook's screen is made of lower quality panels, I know, I owned one, and it had a matte screen and it wasn't brilliant (no pun intedend). That's why they use glossy.

Since we are still at moderate screen sizes - 10.1' 12.1', it can go without reflecting too much. I own a Nokia N95, top of the line phone a few years ago, and it has a glossy screen. Given it's a small size, sometimes I even forget it's glossy.

I forget non colorblind people have different standards for screens.

at any rate, I settled on the HP dm1z.

I am hoping your right about the small screen minimizing the reflective issue.

Actually, I never paid attention to it but, I think my captivate has a glossy screen as well.

So thanks for your advice.

Oh, you are colorblind ? But even so, the glossy screen can improve the blacks and whites, so it improves readability, even if you are colorblind.

Seems like a nice netbook! If you want more graphics performance you might consider adding more RAM, although it already comes with a comfortable 2GB. But given it's shared with the GPU, if you ever do something that needs both RAM usage and GPU usage, it might benefit.

You're welcome!

P.S. I just noticed I answered the post before thinking the second poster was a different person than you, the OP, hence the use of third person LOLOL.

I'm not totally colorblind but, you have to understand even a minor colorblindness can be a bit annoying when it comes to issues of color.

I have come to the conclusion some of my few weird taste are in part due to being colorblind.

I'm generally ok when it comes to colors but, the more complex the colors get, the more likely I am to completely lose interest in a very quick and even abrupt fashion. It is actually funny because, I tend to forget I am colorblind until random situations pop up.. like those colorblindness test or discussing issues of quality in screens.

I can pick out various issues with monitors outside of color like uneven back light, quirky resolution, or things like that.

The model I am going for comes with 3 gigs and 7200 rpm HDD.

After reading up on it I actually found one thing to worry about more than the CPU speed/ram would be HDD speed can actually be a bottleneck more than other things due to lots of reading/writing done in programming. So, that works out.

I actually am getting it for 400$ as a refurb from tiger direct which is an amazing deal since even with a 30$ coupon from HP it still comes out to like 500$ with taxes x.x

Only E-350 model I have seen with a matte screen is the Lenovo x120e, and that is hard to find right now let alone for cheap.

That's a nice setup! 3GB is great, and good going for the 7200rpm HDD!

I actually intend to buy an SSD for my future netbook so I can move it around while using it without worrying about platters and heads and stuff But I will be going for a small 60GB SSD (not worth for me spending more money on storage for a netbook), in your case the fast HDD is probably the best for work on large projects and stuff and with all the writing to disk too.

Btw, that price is fantastic! Let us know how good it is when you get it!

Cheers!
