This summer, hopefully.

Thread Starter
I will present to you, Brain Drill 2.0! Since I'm a poor high-school student, don't expect a crazy build. However, I'm going to do the best I can within my minute budget.

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 940BE
Motherboard: Asus M3A76
RAM: 8GB G.Skill Pi DDR2 800
Video Card: HD6870
HDD: 500gb Hitachi DeskStar
PSU: HEC X-Power 600w
Case: ThermalTake Armor A90
Soundcard: Asus Xonar DX

I'm already excited.

Any changes you'd recommend making?

go am3 ddr3 and grab an amd phenom x4 810. youll be better off if you ever want to upgrade.

EDIT: Just noticed this is more of an upgrade to the current rig, still grab an AM3 cpu, it will be more relevant if you wanna upgrade to say am3+ as you can afford parts

so you'r basicly gonna get a new cpu, gpu, and sound card?

I think you would be better off not getting the sound cad and get a better motherboard and DDR3 ram instead of that more expensive DDR2 ram, and because you are are only a student i assume your not gonna be doing to much rendering, so all you really need is 4 gigs of ram.

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition
Motherboard: MSI 760GM-P33
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1333
Video Card: HD6870

and just use all the stuff you already have, it will be a little less then $400, but you will be able to overclock that cpu to atleast 4ghz with ease, and be more future proof then the stuff you were gonna get, you can always downgrade the cpu to somthing cheaper if needed. but remember if your gonna overclock you need you get an aftermarket cpu cooler.

btw Im a poor high school student too, I built my rig under $250 ish

your post has some merit to it, but not much. the sound card is unnecessary unless you have nice speakers and headphones.

It makes no sense to upgrade to DDR3 now, as you already have ddr2 ram and mother board. Really all you need is a Phenom II 840, or 955. the 955 could reach 4GHz, it is not guaranteed as posted.

but by not grabbing a soundcard you can spend more money on your gpu and getting a cpu cooler
