GTX 580 3-way SLI Overheat - Cannot Solve :(

Thread Starter
I've been wanting to build my ultimate rig for quite a few years, and finally have the means, but I seem to have run into a road block.

I am trying to run three Gigabyte GTX 580 Super Overclock's in SLI, but card #1 which is on top closest to the CPU and has my monitor attached, keeps overheating and shutting down while running any game, which ultimately causes a full PC shutdown.

Card #2 (middle) seems to run at about 77-80C under load.
Card #3 (bottom next to X-FI Card) runs at about 65-70C under load.

I have tried to run it with the case open and even manually held a 120mm case fan near the cards. I tried air toward, away, and blowing air in through the intake at the back on the case, but card #1 continues to increase in temp until shutdown even with the gpu fans blowing at 100%.

I even tried downclocking the cards to 405mhz core/810 shader/260 mem but had the same overheat result.

This card did not overheat when it was in 2 way SLI (with X-Fi card between GPUs). It cannot seem to manage another GPU next to it.

I Don't know what else to do. I would really rather not spend the money on a water cooling system. Does anyone have any thoughts before I give up on my ultimate dream and return one of the cards? frown.gif

The case fan I was manually holding does not provide high air flow, so I was considering moving to a Azza Hurricane 2000 case, but I don't know if that would help.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance for anyone who chimes in.

P.S. during the few mins I saw of playtime before it shut down... it was rawsome!

Intel Core i7 2600K (running stock)
8gb 2133mhz Kingston Hyper x ram

i would suggest going to a water cooled setup for the gpus.

also what case are you using.

what are the temps on card 1? Some cards can OC with better temps than others. Try switching card 1 and 3. If your OC'ing the OC, reset to factory OC untill temps are stable.

If your looking at new cases, look into Silverstone cases. With the 45' degree mobo setup, there is no TOP card. Every card gets same air flow. Plus AP fans are top notch.

Temps on card #1 are stable at 56C at idle. Under load it will continue to increase until shutdown (around 97C)

I have never tried to overclock them beyond the factory settings, even when downclocking there is no improvement.

Options:
- reapply tim on first card
- switch cards around to see if same problem persists
- mod your case for better air flow and cooling
- lower your ambient inside your house
- go water, but stay away from ek blocks.

Question:
What's the speed of your fan when it goes over 97c?

Never had to apply TIM. Using stock coolers which are the windforce 3X from Gigabyte.

why do you need three cards? are you running a surround setup? if you arent, one card is better than multiple cards.

if you are running a surround setup, get MSI Lightning Xtremes =)
