(Build Log) C2D to 2nd Gen i7!

Thread Starter
This is just a log of my build. It first started off as upgrades but pretty much turned into an entirely new build. One thing led to another because of compatibility issues as well as hardware lust. I transferred my old HDDs, media card reader, HSF, and what not over to my new rig. I'm still using the same monitor, keyboard/mouse, speakers, etc.

Enough of that nonsense, time for the good stuff.

NEW (2011):
CPU: 2nd Gen i7 2600k

MoBo:
Initially - MSI P67A-GD65(B3) (only had one internal USB header, I NEED more than that...)
Currently - Gigabyte Z68X-UD4-B3
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws X 8GB Kit DDR3-1333 CL7

HDD: WD Caviar Black 500GB SATA3

ODD: Lite-On DVD+RW w/ Lightscribe

PSU: Corsair HX 850W

Case: NZXT Tempest EVO

RECYCLED:
ATI Radeon X1900 512MB
Zalman CNPS9700LED
WD Caviar 500GB SATA(2?)
WD Caviar 250GB SATA(2?)
Multi-Media Card Readers
Samsung B2230 LCD Monitor
Logitech MX3200 KB/Mouse Combo
Logitech Z-5500 Speakers

OLD RIG (2006):
C2D E6600
Asus P5W DH Deluxe
4x1GB G.Skill DDR2-800 CL4
OCZ Fatal1ty 550W
DVD+RW w/ Lightscribe (PATA)
DVD-R (PATA)
Thermaltake Tsunami Dream Case

Any questions, comments, concerns, suggestions? Feedback will be greatly appreciated.

I'm thinking about what to upgrade next. Here's my wishlist:
In what order should I get these items to maximize performance? I don't game much but do a lot of photo editing with Adobe CS5 and Lightroom 3.

I was thinking this:
  • SSD (reduces overall load times)
  • Graphics Card (Adobe's GPU acceleration isn't all that great/useful)
  • RAM (Slight increase responsiveness maybe?)
  • HSF (Allows me to start OC-ing. Current HSF doesn't keep the CPU cool enough to start bumping up the vcore)

SSD is a great upgrade. I don't think you'll see much difference going from the 1333 to 1600 RAM, especially with both being CAS7. You'l get more performance form OC'd CPU than that RAM upgrade IMO. Obviously your GPU is out of date, but if you don't game much it need not be a priority. Have fun with your new build.

I'd say the best value upgrade would be a CPU cooler. You should be able to overclock it by a pretty significant amount

I folded WAY too soon.

Noctua NH-U12P SE2 and EVGA GTX460 SC EE 1GB were ordered and should be at my doorstep in two days.

I hate Amazon and its awesome Gold Box Deals.
