I could be wrong.
I'd hope he meant just upgrading, but if not, then yes, ya need all the expansions in order to use Cata. It's not cheap if you're starting fresh, I would say it's not even worth it anymore, wait for the next best thing. (KOR or GW2)

EDIT: I don't hate on WoW, in fact I still play on and off whenever.

This is still a pretty good deal though for those that haven't gotten into Cata yet. Just my 2¢.

Correct. You would have to buy WoW, TBC, WotLK, and Cata in order to play Cata.

I feel bad for the guys who tried it and didn't have the will to get to end-game content. There really is no other game touching it as far as end-boss gaming. The fights are complex and require skill, not just button mashing. It's far from WotLK where you could go in and faceroll your keyboard and still down bosses. If you don't believe be visit the WoW forums and look at all the children who are complaining the 5-man heroics are too hard and that they can't even attempt to raid.

My guild managed to clear out regular content and get a few heroics down and it took a significant amount of work to do so.

This game consumed 3+ years of my life.. started when it came out, then took a break after Wrath... then bought Cata.. and was thoroughly dissapointed. Same ol, same ol. I left and went to Rift. Wow wouldnt support Eyefinity correctly, so that just added to the frustrations for me. Rift fully supports the technology. I honestly wouldnt spend the $19 on it, as it takes way too much dedication to the game to actually become epic geared. I lived 2 years of my life in WoW raiding every night for 8-10 hrs, and for what? just to have the next Xpac released making all my efforts for that gear obsolete.

And you dont think exactly the same thing is gonna happen in Rift? Of course it will. So hate all you want. Ya you want to Rift cuz you say u wasted ur life cuz new xpac ur gear is crap, well duhh, u progress into new content , new bosses. Your gonna have the same thing in RIFT once they announce a xpac or whatnot. Or even if they get there that farr. Which I doubt, as everyday I see /trade WTT RIFT toons for WoW Toons etc etc.

Yes ive had this argument with guildies and close friends. You said FOR WHAT? You had fun playing at that time didnt u? you played it didnt u? Wasnt a waste. U just now think its a waste cuz u dont wanna play anymore.

Not personal hate towards you, but that applies to all who is that argument.

@OP
$19 for Cata is not bad, but WoW + BC + WOTLK + CATA to finally play is a joke still. Once Blizz combines WoW + BC + WOTLK all into 1 pack and sell it say at $39 and cata $19 + $15 /month thats still bank and will bring in more new players. Then once next xpack comes out, just add CATA to the pack.

Blizz still selling WOTLK and BC for what they are is insane, ya you use the content but just to level, your not gonna sit there and enjoy BC before you buy WOTLK etc. Only thing I never understood about blizz.

I think Vanilla WOW is 5$ on the blizzard store still (or was for a while). Or at least the battle chest (which is vanilla/bc) for cheaper.

If you look around you can find the previous games for cheap easily enough.

As a side note, if you don't plan on playing the game/buying this... don't post? This is a deals post, for those who actually ARE interested in it. We couldn't care less that you played but stopped

That's gonna happen with pretty much every MMORPG that releases xpacs... It's inevitable.

As for Cata being the same ol' same ol'... What? Did you even play WotLK? WotLK was a /faceroll_keyboard=win joke. Required no skill to clear out the content. Cata on the other hand... Well... Just glance over at the official forums. It's full of QQ from noobs who can't move and hit hotkeys at the same time, who don't use their mouse to guide their player but rather the A and D keys. Cata finally takes a little bit of skill and cooperation between players to get content down.

A lot of negativity of this game comes because people get addicted and play too much cutting into their sleep time, work time, and family time. When played properly only in truely free time there's no harm, then it's a fun game to enjoy.

If a person can do that, then it's well worth the initial fees for the software and $15 a month. If they can't do that, then they need to stay away from this game.

This basically can be said about any mmorpg. I would say it's up to the player to decide whether the game is worth the money or not.

Honestly though, WoW has gone downhill over the years with each expansion.
