6950 or 6970 - Page 2

Well, i have 3 unlocked hd6950. If it were my, until AMD says they are going to laser cut the chips to lock them, unlock is always a good idea, i would say 90% unlock just fine.

Just unlock shaders, not the hd 6970 bios flash, since that will f**k up your mem chips.

Really? Post some proof. I guarantee you don't have any. A lot of people claiming that in reality bricked their GPU's because they had no clue what they were doing and it was their first BIOS mod. Please, please, please quit spreading this rumor.

I have- unlocking shaders on my card resulted on heavy artefatcting even on desktop, maybe not memory, but still...

On the topic- save our money! 6950 and 6970 are essentially the same chips and the extra shaders on 6970 give something like 3-5% performance which can be easily matched with OC only

But still what? Did you try another 6970 BIOS? So you had a bad experience trying to do a full unlock. I understand that completely. I had it happen trying to flash one of my GTX 465's. But where is your proof it had anything to do with the memory?

Sorry, but there's always a risk when flashing. And memory timings usually isn't a good thing to mess with.

Obviously dude. I never argued there wasn't and didn't bother to argue whether 90% success rate was high or low as I know some people have bricked their cards. But please show me some proof the ram timings are different. And as for memory timings not being good to mess with, what are you talking about. Hundreds of people including myself tighten the ram timings of our sig rig. Did you mean to argue that messing with the Hynix ram used on these GPU's isn't good to try and tighten? If so post some proof.

I don't need to post any proof or valid material for that matter simply because I don't care what you or any other person on this forum decides to do with his/hers card. I'm just sharing my opinion.

As far as I know changing to the wrong memory timings can cause corruption. Of course there might be other reasons such as voltages. The possibilites for failure are there, and you know there's a risk even though you don't know the exact reason. Why risk it?

The same reason pump more volts into their CPU. To snag the most performance you can out of any given component. You have every right to voice your opinion, even if it is wrong. I may not agree with you, but I would certainly defend your right to say it. However in this case, I'm not debating opinions. I'm arguing facts. And the facts are that you can tighten memory without causing damage. Just like you can overvolt it. Within reason ofc.

This.
Look i like to be optimistic... but its a little hard when 9/10 people claim to have done what is called the "impossible" and have no proof of it..? I'm not saying there should be a law enforced as to whatever you say you have to back it up with some form of evidence... I just find it a little odd that a lot of people claim to do the unthinkable post on this and other sites about it.. and not have a screen shot of their victory? If you can go through the trouble of making a post or thread about it.. and you know whats in store why not beat it before it happes..? and not pointing fingers in anyone in this thread TBH i didn't go back the other pages just saw what senator posted and wanted to give my 2 cents.

+1. I'm sick and tired of people spreading the same BS on every forum about how flashing the 6970 bios can kill the video RAM.
