AMD Problems

Thread Starter
Hey all I'm pretty new to building and maintaining my own pc...but I recently bought and have constructed my own and everything was working fine with a few minor hiccups...doa stuff and a faulty mobo...but here's where I'm currently at

PSU: Rosewill 630W 80 silver certified
CPU: AMD Phenom II 1100 black edition 3.3ghz
MOBO: MSI 890FXA-GD65
RAM: Corsair vengeance 8gb (2x4gb) 1600 ps3
Video Card: Asus Radeon HD 6850 1gb

I originally had a ASUS M4A88T-V mobo...it was DoA so I returned it and got one from frys...I think it was the step up from that one...EVO maybe? Anyways the Asus board worked wonders except it was also faulty and my computer would just randomly shut off...and not during games or anything stressful...just running an internet browser only and it was just short out and the computer would shut off...so I exchanged it for the MSI mobo listed above today and I havn't had that problem.

Unfortunately now I have a few new ones. First thing will be explained by the next one I think. My computer is heating up (I think) too much and it will just randomly freeze in a few minutes of turning it on. I've since taken off turbo on my processor and trimmed it down from 3.7ghz down to 3.3ghz.

Also with my new MSI mobo my fan speed even from the get go or in BIOS runs at max speed...the processor isn't recognized despite the guy at Fry's AND MSI website AND 3 MSI support guys telling me its for sure supported...

I can't control the fan on it AT ALL. I can't even get any volume from my headphones either. It works through my USB headphones but through the headphone jacks (back through mobo, front through case, or through the one on my keyboard) it doesn't (no it's not on mute either)

Does anyone have any experience with this setup? The AMD processor and the MSI mobo? I'm 2 seconds away from going to Frys tomorrow and getting the Asus board because they were out of stock today (should be in tomorrow). I can't get the headphone jacks working but more importantly the fan on my processor is SCREAMING loud and I have no way to control it (nor do I want to because I don't want to force it low and run my computer and ruin my processor)

Edit: If anyone wants direct links to the items I can provide that as well if I was too vague

First, is the fan you're using a 4 pin or 3 pin fan? Are you plugging it into a 4 or 3 pin header on the motherboard? If you answered 3 pin to either one of those questions, that's why you're not getting fan control.

Random lockups can be a sign of many things. First culprit I would say could be RAM, which you can verify your RAM is fine by running memtest86+. What kind of temperatures are you getting when it freezes?

What do you mean the CPU isn't detected? In the BIOS under your hardware information what CPU does it list you have? The board should support any X6 out of the box like MSI and Fry's is telling you. If it actually isn't detecting, try flashing to the latest bios using MSI's guide to flashing with USB thumb drives. Please don't use M-Flash unless you want to potentially brick your motherboard. This should fix the CPU detection (if present) and also possibly fix fan control if you're using a 4 pin fan into a 4 pin header.

It's a 4pin fan plugged directly above it on the mobo into the 4 pin slot where it tells you to in the User guide for the mobo. That's for sure not wrong (unless there is a hardware issue on the board but only that one pin? I doubt it)

I already mflashed it already actually with the help of MSI support...I downloaded their auto detect program and it wouldn't detect that I was running 18.1 and needed 18.3 for whatever reason so I had to manually do it. Everything updated fine but the problem persisted.

As for the freezing I don't know what temp it was at because I wasn't checking it at the time, it would just lock up. Ever since I turned off the turbo boost on my processor using AMDs software (not the mobos software) it hasn't locked up

As for not being recognized let me clarify. In bios, it recognizes the processor, in right clicking my computer and checking through windows it recognizes it, but with any software from MSI it just has all of the processor information blank...which leads to not being able to control the fan speed.

I've been using AMD core overdrive software and that still recognizes the processor but the control center for the mobo which is where I'd assume I could do everything like it says (fan control, overclocking, etc.) it's just all blank

As for the RAM i didn't freeze once on my old mobo and even now it recognizes the ram. I'll check that link to be sure though anyways

AMD Overdrive currently reads 40 but with the other mobo is was around 31 like this...my gpu is even reading 52 which is higher than it was running SC2 yesterday on max settings. When I reinstalled my cpu I made sure to wipe off all the old thermal paste and I put on fresh paste too. It's not the best quality one but it wasn't the cheapest either. It's Formula 5 by Antec

And I've just been browsing the internet now
