Need some urgent help with CPU clocks

Thread Starter
So I started having problems after I had to format my hdd. After that, my cpu would heat up to 40-45ºC idle, and 60-68ºC when installing programs, gaming, etc.

This worried me a lot because I understand Phenoms doesnt like going over 65ºC (My Phenom is a x4 955 BE), and when going over that temp the core's fan would start going crazy over 5500RPM, and this was hell.

I tried asking for help in the cooling sub-forum and I got a new fan and all, but I found it very weird because those temps were abnormal for my cpu and I wasnt overclocking at all, not even the gpu.

So, after buying the new fan the temps didnt change much except for idle that now went down to 34-40ºC, but core will keep heating up to 65~ºC when under pressure.

This is my temp when Im installing something.

So I tried to look for Cool n Quiet in the bios, I didnt find it, but I found this:

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o...o/SAM_0080.jpg

I understand that 3200 is a big number. I remember seeing 800 or even 1000 before. But when trying to set it I get this menu and I dont know what to do because I never overclocked anything before and Im scared to ruin my proc:

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o...o/SAM_0081.jpg

My full specs are in my signature, please I need help setting up the proper clocks. I dont want to overclock my PC because I dont own any awesome cooling devices, and I dont want to ruin it's performance.

Thank you for any help you guys can provide me.

I think what happened is your cooler was never properly seated to begin with. somehow the CPU stayed underclocked until you formatted, now it's running at the normal speed and is heating up. Re seat your CPU and cooler.

Sounds like your HSF is mounted badly. Reseat it and temperatures should improve greatly. You never should go above 62C, because it is the maximum safe limit.

I already reseated it twice, the temperature was the same.

I want to know how to underclock it again, and what values should I use?

Underclocking will barely decrease temperatures. Download CPUZ and report what your Core voltage is under load.

What are your ambient temps? Also, what kind of cooler did you get? Did you use the pre-packaged thermal compound?

It looks like you have Cool n Quiet enabled as well. Do you have any sort of fan throttling controls enabled in your BIOS?

When you formatted your HDD, did you reset the BIOS? Have you tried resetting the CMOS to get it back to default?

Ambient temp is 22ºC.

I got a Xfan80 Deep Cool, only one I could find over here.

I believe the fan options are set to auto in the BIOS, disabling it will only make it rush to max rpm.

I dont think it did reset. No, I didnt try resseting the CMOS to default, should I?

It might be worth a try resetting your CMOS, or even just resetting your BIOS settings back to default (after you've saved your settings to a separate profile).

If you say you've already re-seated your HSF twice, it is probably not that.

By the way, 3200 is the default speed for the 955. 800 or 1000 is the number your motherboard is setting it to when you are at idle, therefore I knew CoolnQuiet was enabled (also, your vCore went down to around 1 volt).

You COULD try to decrease the voltage to decrease your temps, but you'd have to decrease your clocks as well.

Ok... I just looked up the CPU fan you claim to be using. All I've found is a case fan with that name. Are you sure that is what your cooler is called? Maybe you are thinking of a different part you bought.

I dont remember making any change to my BIOS other than boot order and hdd priorities, so I guess I can try that.

Decreasing the voltage and the temps seems like a good option, at least until I find better means to cool my cpu.

And no, it wasnt a CPU fan, Im using stock in there.
