what does this mean? (memtest86 related) - Page 7

Unfortunately I spoke too soon. While I was able to install and run Win8 after replacing the processor (Intel 3570K), the system froze twice in two weeks. I then ran memtest86 again from CD and found garbled / scrambled text as before. I suspect this problem may be related to memory timing (discussed re BSOD at http://ow.ly/1SciiJ for example) so I'm exchanging the mobo (ASRock Extreme4 Z77), and changing the memory from 2x4GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical 1866 to 1x8GB Crucial Ballistix Sport 1600 about which Crucial says at http://ow.ly/1Sci9O "Guaranteed-compatible with the ASRock Z77 Extreme4". Hope this works.

No system freeze has occurred since swapping the mobo and memory. While memtest86 still displays scrambled characters after a time, memtest86+ runs without problems, so perhaps the scrambled characters are caused by memtest86.

Silly question, is running memtest86 in windows with multiple instances to test all the ram the same as running memtest86 through boot as he did?

Wish you the best of luck, im trying to get rid of an error on ram myself!

Memtest86 run from a boot disk is good for testing whether memory is defective, HCI memtest in windows is better for testing overclocked memory.
