Project NV523NM (TEATIME) a 690II nVIDIA Build (Water 8/14)

Project NV532NM (Teatime)
Would someone be so kind as to design me a logo please?

WARNING: I type A LOT. More than is necessary. This build log will likely encompass up to 8 months of work and school. Don’t hope for a 6-week build Due to my parents not wanting me to cut back on credit hours and pick up a part time job (Optical Engineering Major) I have received access to as much funding as I need to make this future-resistant on the condition that it's "finished" before 8/25/11. So a 6-week build is exactly what this is going to be. The caveat? The money comes from my college fund. :/

A little history:
This is my first project that I’ve actually done any extensive modding and documenting. I’ve built several systems for friends and family but none of them used anywhere near the amount of aftermarket parts or good old hurt-your-fingers modding. I’ve never actually had a terribly powerful PC. 2002 introduced me to a Pentium 4 1.8Ghz. In 05-06 I was running an Athalon XP 3000+ and thought that was pretty hot stuff overclocked to 2.3Ghz. Then in 2009 I was forced by my school to buy an HP 8530w and was fairly awed by the performance gain from the little Athalon. In between these upgrades I performed several builds for friends w/ the most powerful being in late 2009. I selected hardware for, and assembled, an i7 920 coupled to two GTX 295’s in Quad SLi. Shortly after, I assembled a 955BE coupled to two GTX 260’s. Both of those builds really ruined me for my little laptop.
Currently:
So E3 and the various Skyrim announcements completely ruined my will to ‘get along’ with the 8530w. I NEED that game with the very fibers of my being. I got hooked on Morrowind and haven’t been able to get that series out of my mind. Also, I love the Mass Effect series. ME3 comes out in March 2012 and I need to be ready to transfer my save and run that and Skyrim as high as I can. The only problem is that I went into this with only $500 and no source of income. On my birthday (December 8) I get $500 more (for not doing drugs up to 21 years of age) and then maybe some money for Christmas. Hopefully I’ll be able to pick up a job sometime around September and maybe get a little more moneys? IDK.
The Theme:
This build will be nVidia-centric. Key colors will be black and green (hence the name, Teatime). Lighting will primarily be emitted by UV reactive items in the case. No matter what games I needed to run, I have always trusted them to nVidia. All the way from the GeForce 4 series to now, I’ve been an nVidia guy. After stumbling upon some build pics a few weeks back I’ve been waiting and planning. I am rather fond of the Cooler Master 690II nVidia edition chassis and my build will be focused upon that. The computer will live in my room so the LED switch on top (more on that later) was a necessary feature. Before the 690II I was actually looking at the Storm Sniper but it too easily lent itself to blue (which I’m sick of) and didn’t have the easy rad capacity that the 690II does. Plus it was $20 more (w/o) window than my 690II with the nVidia claw as a window. I hope to achieve a good balance between back and green. Going with LED over this UV nonsense would have been easier, but I don’t want the diffused, room-brightening light that LED fans and some cold cathodes give off. I want a more subdued kind of illumination. I still want all the green elements, but more…. menacing? I also don’t want the case to be too ‘shouty’ which is why I’m keeping the outside black and putting the fans behind a mesh.
What’s going into this build?
Hardware will be decided when I get the money to buy it. But here’s what I’m thinking of:
  • CM690II Advanced nVidia case - BOUGHT
  • 6x GELID Wing 12 PL Green UV Fans – BOUGHT
  • 20x 2000mcd 3mm UV LEDs (for fans) – BOUGHT
  • Corsair AX850 Modular PSU – BOUGHT
  • RX240 Radiator – BOUGHT
  • RX120 Radiator – BOUGHT
  • RS240 Radiator – BOUGHT
  • XSPC Dual Bay Res. w/ 35x – BOUGHT
  • Koolance 580 Full Cover Block – BOUGHT
  • EVGA 580 Backplate – BOUGHT
  • 10 feet of Primochill UV Green Tubing – BOUGHT
  • 12x G1/4 Compression Fittings – BOUGHT
  • Clear Tinted Acrylic - BOUGHT
  • 2x 12” UV cold Cathodes + Inverter – BOUGHT
  • 3x bridges or whatever they are that let you screw wires to them to help with cable management and circuitry
  • 12v (negative) Relay powered by the 5v LED switch (this will control all of the case lighting)
  • Custom-Made Wire Management Grommets (once I figure out how)
  • 100ft. of Black Paracord – BOUGHT
  • 100ft. of UV Green Paracord – BOUGHT
  • 20ft. Black 3:1 3/16” Heat Shrink – BOUGHT
  • 5ft. 1/8” Heat Shrink (I plan to relocate SATA power adapters)
  • Sandy Bridge i7 2600K – BOUGHT
  • Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3-1600 – BOUGHT
  • OCZ Apex 3 SSD 120GB – BOUGHT
  • EVGA GTX 5890 – BOUGHT
  • GIGABYTE Z68XP-UD4 – BOUGHT
  • Combo DVD Drive – BOUGHT
  • Front-Panel Modded USB 3.0 (if I can make it work)
  • Maybe some a fan silencers controller.
  • Mionix Zibal 60 – BOUGHT
  • Mionix Naos 5000 – BOUGHT
  • ASUS ML239H – BOUGHT
My Ideas:
I’d like this build to be something of a declaration of my love for nVidia, as ridiculous as it may seem.

So first of all, the case and fans: The case will retain its current green accents except for the claw. I may choose to make it a smidgen bigger, or just replace green the acrylic with clear acrylic. I might then cut a very small windowed (more like backlit) representation of the nvidia logo in the square with nVIDIA text beneath it in the ‘cup’ area of the claw design and fasten acrylic backing for that to the case side in the same fashion as the claw. I plan to immediately remove the lower drive bays excepting the top two. The mesh on the GFX card holder will be removed and painted to match the nVidia painting inside the case. Most fan grilles will be removed/cut open more in a bid for a quieter computer and less obstructed airflow. All grilles in front of rads will be removed. My first idea was to dye all my fans, but nobody makes a good UV green polycarbonate/acrylic dye. The white LEDs in the GELIDs will be removed and replaced with 3mm UV LEDs to make the blades glow. Some modification of the LED's reflectors may be in order. The front case fan will undergo similar treatment or be replaced completely. Depends how flowy and oretty it is in comparison to the GELIDs Two of the UV LED GELIDs will be put under the top trim piece in an exhaust configuration, right over where the RS rad should go. One GELID (UV modded) will go in the exhaust port.

I also intend to remove the LED negative conections from the GELIDs and run them to the 12v negative relay which will power the LEDs in the case and the cold cathodes. Wiring diagram will be adapted from the CM Scout Club relay diagram at a later date.

Radiators will be placed in top, bottom, and possibly 120mm rear exhaust. The RS radiator will go in the top (RX won’t fit) and will be an exhaust rad. The RX radiator will sit on top of two GELIDs. I have yet to determine piping or water flow direction. I’m thinking Pump/Res -> RS240 -> CPU -> RX120 -> GTX580 -> RX240-> Pump/Res.

For the front of the case I’d like to keep things simple. For the one optical drive, I plan to stealth it. Saw it on a HAF X and loved it, so why not? I wish there was a good way to stealth the XSPC bay res and preserve the fluid level window, but I don’t think there is an easy way to do it. Not sure what I’m going to do about that. A green LED will light the bay from the opposite side (also attached to the 12v circuit). If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I wish to keep the full mesh look of the front of the 692 but would love to be able to see my res's fluid level. I suppose I could maybe mount the bay covers over the black aluminum front and run it recessed, but I don't think it has anchor holes to run like that. We'll see what you all say and what happens.

All wires will be single sleeved (by me) excepting USB, 1394, fan cables, and other front panel connections.

I can’t think of anything else to explain about it right now so use your imagination. The fans and case should be here July 14th-ish so look forward to an update then. I can't find any good digicams except my phone... so this might be ugly for the first month or so. I'll try to find our DSLR though.

If you have any comments or suggestions. Please share them. I'm always welcome to alternatives. And last but not least, subscribe if you're interested, and enjoy!

Update! CM Sickleflows arrived, not sure if I'll even use them any more so no pics. Soldering iron tip arrived. Weller ST series 1/32" conical.

So I was totally set on a 560Ti Hawk from MSI because I read that with a good OC you can take it to 570 levels. Then I thought, "Wait. Once I reach 570 levels I'll just treat it like a 570 and I know I'll start comparing it to 570s in benching and games and just be super disappointed, even though it's a 560." So then I looked at GTX 570s. I settled on an EVGA 570 and did the price maths. It bumped me just over $2000.

Then I thought "Hmmm, I've heard that 570s are louder than 560 Tis and run hotter. I wonder how much it would be to WC." So I fell into another rabbit hole.

After learning that it would be expensive to WC a 570, the true computer enthusiast in me reared its ugly head as my thoughts went from budget to: "$%^k that! If I'm going to break $2K because of a graphics card, I'm going to do it in style! EVGA GTX 580 w/ EK water block and black EK backplate! Let's OC this mofo!" But that will require more cooling and I'd probably want more than the X20 pump with the RX/RS 240 kit so a custom loop is in order.

To put into perspective how ridiculous this is, I'm planning on a 60Hz monitor. Maybe 120Hz would be worthwhile. I AM trying to make this future-resistant. Advice would be nice.

Just a little update. School's been craaaazy but today I had a little bit of time to try my hand at some sleeving. I really like the look of the paracord, but I will admit that I'm bothered at the way it hugs the twisted cables so tightly. This is my first time sleeving so don't be too harsh These will be behind the mobo anyway.

The case: here. I wasn't thinking about lighting or anything else when taking these pictures, so errything is washed-out and blurry.

Hopefully UPS will drop off my molex/atx tools within an hour so that I can begin the 'real' sleeving. I'll update this post when I finish something else today.

Oh, hello.... Not too great, I'll probably redo the HS.

I know this isn't a real "build" update, but something cool arrived at my doorstep today.

Yes, that is a backlit mechanical KB that matches my build.
For a full review see here.

Sleeving is painfully slow with projects in every class and finals to boot. I feel like it's died, since the first night I had my tools I sleeved the SATA power for the HDD/SSD and the 8-pin. i also precut 20' of heatshrink to 15mm using a kitchen knife and some scrap cedar. That was an interesting experience.

A little preview of what is to come. Parts list updated.

Finishing the 24-pin tonight or early tomorrow. Getting two pieces of paracord in one 3/16" tube of heatshrink is truly maddening. I threw down my tools and walked away 3 times today.

It doesn't help that the AX850 has 4 of these little b***ards on the visible side of the 24-pin. I have also taken to calling the 24-pin "Medusa" due to the the fact that 24 becomes 28 and two of the wires are twisted together.
