Another stupid "Help me OC thread"!

Thread Starter
My Lord Xeb said I should post instead of PM; so here it is!

I am having trouble getting my Q9300 past 3.45GH(my key next to x is broken, waiting on a new switch :/). So, I figured I would ask the community for help. I am not exactly sure what information I would need to provide.

You may be hitting an FSB wall but those usually happen a little lower.

What ram do you have exactly? From what I can tell it is your ram that is holding you back. Get some decent DDR2 1066 ram and you shouldn't have any issues going higher.

Also it is not stupid to ask for help. It took me forever to reallize my ram was holding be back as well. My old crap hated going even over 870MHz... But since you have a Q9300, your multi is rather low so that means you gotta push your FSB speed higher.

This also means a few other things come into play:

RAM - The higher the FSB speed goes, the higher your ram will to. For best stability it is recommended to run in a 1:1 ratio.

CPU Term MCH (NB) and CPU PLL voltages come into play once you start pushing past about 425MHz, but that varies as well.

What are your settings right now? More information would be nice.

If you can, list out what settings you have like this (layout for UD3R/P not your board):

If those are Kingston Value sticks, its the RAM. If its HyperX, its definitely NOT the RAM, as those should hit 550Mhz stable at 5-5-5-15 timings all day.

Also, that board is notorious for not reaching 500 FSB with a quad. Honestly, there's only a few boards I know of that'll push a quad that high on the FSB...and that's not one of them.

Ok, I'll check. Do you see any other bottlenecks on my system? I was thinking about upgrading some time soon. I'm not sure if I can afford making a jump up to the i5-i7 level, so I was wondering if it's worth upgrading or waiting.

Hmm, I think they may be kingston value, as they are low profile and have no stickers/markings on them.

So essentially you are saying that it is not possible to go higher on my OC? I'm okay with 3.5 I guess, I am 24 hour OCCT stable and my gtx 470 is stable as well. However, I would like to eek out a little more performance.

So I guess the only way to achieve that is to upgrade my ram? Also, would it be worth just keeping this as is and purchasing a newer system around December?\\

Edit: Pioneer, we might be having a TF2 LAN this weekend if you're interested in driving up to the Kent, WA area :3 If not, mind if I bug you if I ever need help with computers? hahaha

ok well change your divider to 1:1(if you havent already cant see it in your screen shot) cause your memory is probably causing the trouble and some more info on what happens when you get past 3.45ghz please.does it load into windows or does it blue screen in windows or does it not post?and maybe try bumping voltages a bit.

My ratio is 1:1 if I am not mistaken. Last I checked in the BIOS it was anyways; can I see it via software at all? At 3.45 I am stable in OCCT for 24hrs, I was just wondering if I can go higher. If I try and go higher with all the same voltages and settings it works fine until I leave my computer idling for about... 30 minutes and then blue screens saying Page File did not load or something (When I looked it up it was regarding bad memory. When I turn it back to normal and run memtest86 I am okay)

See if you can lower your RAM speed down BELOW 460Mhz (460Mhz is your FSB speed, so 1:1 puts your memory at 460Mhz or DDR2-920). If you can get your RAM lower, you can try to test it out with a higher FSB.

You can also try loosening your RAM timings up (don't know what they're at now, but loosen them up). That would also help if its a RAM problem.

Otherwise, no I wouldn't suggest buying more RAM. DDR2 is outdated (no offense meant), and its FAR too expensive for what you get anymore. I'd hold onto the money and build a newer system with it. But there's absolutely nothing "wrong" with your system as is either.

Ok, I will try and change the ram and FSB settings now, I will report back in 5 minutes or so. DDR2 is stupid expensive, and is really old. Which is why when my old ram went bad all I could afford at the time is 8 gigs of Kingston Value (it was like 50 bucks a stick I think from the local comp shop).
