Asus Rampage 3 Extreme. Sata3 ssd's/normal harddrives..wont be detected. Need aid.

Hello everyone.

Ive been making the leap from sata2 ssd's and drives and bought a whole lot of sata3 ones. Now i know i wont be able to get all on "top speed" as this motherboard only got 2 sata3 ports, but ohwell, id be ok if they only run in sata2 speeds for now, untill i upgrade for a new pc.

My main issue is that ive tried...but no-one of the sata3 drives are being detected, not in bios, not while in win 7 either.

I got the very latest bios on the motherboard (had to, in order to install the cpu).

Ive also tried only one sata3 ssd drive connected in both IDE and ACHI mode to all sataconnectors. Nothing, they dont show up anywhere. These are brand new drives.

(on a sidenote: when i reinstall any of my old sata2 ssd they work just fine).

Anyone here got the same motherboard as me and is able to actually use a sata3 rated drive?

How did you do it? biggrin.gif

Are you connecting them to the Intel SATA ports? My C300 is a SATA3 drive, I have it connected to the Intel ports and I see it. I have also had it connected to the Marvell ports and the BIOS sees it.

What BIOS are you using?

In BIOS under the Boot tab, highlight "Hard Disk Drives" and hit enter. On the next page highlight "1st Boot Device" and hit enter, do any of them show up in the drop down list?

Hello there.

Yes, ive tried every sata connector slots.
They dont appear in the bios anywhere, nor in windows 7.

My current motherboard bios is: Rampage III Extreme 1401 BIOS

Ps: i installed (again)

Marvell 912x Controller Driver V1.0.0.1036 for Windows 32/64bit XP & Windows 32/64bit Vista & 32/64bit Windows 7.

and

Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager Driver V8.9.0.1023 for Windows 32/64bit XP & Windows 32/64bit Vista & 32/64bit Windows 7.(WHQL)
Intel(R) AHCI/RAID Driver Disk for Windows 32/64bit XP & Windows 32/64bit Vista & 32/64bit Windows 7.

and

Intel Chipset Driver V9.1.1.1023 for Windows 32/64bit XP & 32/64bit Vista & 32/64bit Windows 7

(you have those installed aswell)?

Forgot to mention, but my WIN 7 is 64 bit. I made sure i installed the 64bit versions. Maybe its something else i lack?

Instead of outdated "Matrix Storage Manager", use newer Intel® Rapid Storage Technology. It's the same thing, but Intel changed the name sneakily and made it confusing.

Make sure you are in AHCI in BIOS.

In the worst case I would reset CMOS or even simpler BIOS settings to factory defaults and see if that helps.

I am using a modified R3E 1301 BIOS that includes updated Marvell BIOS & firmware. See this thread for details:
http://www.overclock.net/ssd/1055256-so-whats-best-solution-warning-another.html

I am using Marvell drivers 1.2.0.1003
http://www.station-drivers.com/page/marvell.htm

I am using Intel RST drivers 10.5.1.1001. Some people have reported problems with 10.6.0.1002 drivers.
http://www.station-drivers.com/page/intel%20raid.htm

I am using the chipset drivers that came on the R3E install CD and I have never been able to figure out what version they are. Since everything works I have never tried to update them. Since the Asus website has the same 9.1.1.1023 drivers that you posted and they are dated 12/28/09 those are probably what I have.

My OS is Win7 64b.

Your SSD's should show up in either IDE or AHCI, but for optimum performance on an SSD you should be set to AHCI.

One thing you can try is to shut off your PC, turn the PSU off and unplug it from the wall. Disconnect all your SSD's, HD's and DVD's, etc. Plug in one of your SATA3 SSD's, plug your PSU back in and turn it on, boot the PC and get into BIOS, does it show up?

Since you do not have a OS drive plugged in after you exit BIOS you will get an error message of some kind about not finding the OS driver, insert a bootable CD or whatever, just use the power button on your case to shut the PC down.

After that you will need to plug everything back in, boot the PC, get into BIOS and then check the boot priority and modify as needed to get things back the way they were.

I can think of no reason why they would not show up if the SATA cables are good and you have the power plugged into the SATA3 drives. The old Intel drivers 8.9.0.1023 drivers maybe the reason, but I doubt it.

UPDATE:
ok! i can actually SEE the drives in bios and when i get into win 7... under the..."unit manager"! Its not visable under "my computer"...yet.

Ive used the updater to update the ssds firmware. All good so far, except they cant be accessed... was hoping to quickformat them and start using them..

By the way, these were detected on the normal sata2 connectors. I did connect a sata3 drive to the one of the two sata6 / marvell connectors (no detect so far).

Atlast im getting there... hopefully... wink.gif

Halfway solved ftw!

I installed the ones he mentioned above:

"I am using Intel RST drivers 10.5.1.1001. Some people have reported problems with 10.6.0.1002 drivers.
http://www.station-drivers.com/page/intel%20raid.htm"

Then.... i guess its my bad (english isnt my nature langue), but what i did to make them appear in windows was...

Click on START, lower left corner, then right-click "computer / my computer", then went into computer/diskmanagement (was the second option from the top of the new dropdown menu i got), from there i opened the subfolder named drives on the left hand side, and from there i could format them biggrin.gif

I now got games etc installed on them, works like a charm!

(sidenote: the marvell ones doesnt appear yet, not in bios or in win7).
Ohwell, atleast i can use the new drives.

If i have any success on the marvell sata6 ports...= "il be back"

Tytyty so very much for the aid so far. If i had 1000bux on my paypal you would have had it smile.gif
