GTX 560m 128bit 2GB vs 192bit 1.5GB ???

Thread Starter
Does anyone know how big the performance difference will be? I'm looking to finally retire my G50vt.

So I've been looking at mainly 3 laptops.

Asus G53SX : great design, supports 2 HDDs, backlit keyboard, good build quality, 128bit 2GB GTX 560m

MSI GT683r : decent design (I have a G50vt remember, I'm used to flashy lights lol), 2 HDDs with raid 0, lousy build quality, 192bit 1.5GB GTX 560m

Sager 8130 : best build quality, cheapest, but only supports 1 HDD and no backlit keyboard, very plain design , 192bit 1.5GB GTX 560m

All with Intel i7-2630.

So I'm just wondering, since the G53SX has the gimped 128 bit GTX560m, how much will the performance suffer? It really has everything that I am looking for, but of course nothing can be perfect so Asus just had to screw it up.

Will it be slower than the 192 bit GTX460m (so better off with a G53SW for 1 grand) ?

Thoughts?
Thanks.

I would go with the Sager because of its build quality, price and the best combination of the main components.

The RAM on the 560m will not matter, because there is absolutely no chance that you need more than 1.5Gb of VRAM to max games on a laptop native resolution.

Yeah I understand that it will be slower, but I'm just thinking that if it really is slower than the gtx 460m, why would Asus even make it? They already have the G53SW which is identical but has GTX 460 instead of 560 and costs 1199.99.

Still never got why they put so much VRAM in GT540 cards that are just shrunk down. Isn't the 580m on par with a 560? How can that thing eat 2GB seeing as a 560Ti 2GB barely does 2GB well.

It makes no difference, the cards probably aren't even fast enough to saturate 128 bit bandwidth OR have enough graphical horsepower to use more than 512Mb of VRAM.

Here's my totally unfounded hypothesis:

The fastest memory they put in the mobile chips is under 3GHz effective. Even a GTX450, which was the lowest end card to utilize GDDR5 memory had GDDR5 at an effective 3.6GHz. One would assume they are just putting the memory that couldn't hit the speeds required for desktop parts into the mobile parts (better to use it than to throw away the lower binned memory).

Hey there, just so you know the core voltage is the limiting factor, the IMC can't always do higher speeds at the lower mobile voltage and also GDDR5 can eat up a decent whack of power compared to the mid range chip itself so it helps keep the total power down.

Also note the GTX560M is based off the desktop 550ti.

The RAM may not matter but the bandwidth that the Vram has will matter. The 128-bit model does suffer in enhanced AA situations whereas the 192-bit model doesn't, or if it does it's not as noticeable.

I'd go for the Sager model. I want one but I like my Qosmio too much to walk away from it.

I would go with the 6970m if at all possible. It overclocks like a beast and is about just under a desktop 460.

I'm not telling you which lappy to get because there's too many factors involved, and I really am not that familiar w/mobile versions of gfx cards.

However, I would most def. strongly prefer a 'card' of this caliber to be 1.5GB w/192-bit RAM over 2GB w/128-bit. There's no way the chip itself is powerful enough to run anything that uses up anywhere near 1.5GB, let alone 2, so ... all things being otherwise equal, the benefit of the extra 50% of memory bandwidth is infinitely greater than the benefit of going from 1.5 to 2.0GB of vram (since this benefit is going to be zero in any game you ever run on it).

I've seen benchmarks of the 560M 192 bit versus 128 bit where in benchmarks the Asus G53s is almost 30% slower thanks to two things:

128 bit memory bus
only 16 ROP
(192 bit 560M has 24 ROPs!

hold on a second while I dig this out!

edit: got it!

MSI GTX560M
192 bit GTX 560M
24 ROPS
60GB/s bandwidth
19.5 GPixels/s
MSI GTX560M runs at 814MHz

Asus GTX560M
128 bit GTX 560M
16 ROPS
40GB/s bandwidth
12.4Gpixel/s
Asus GTX560M runs at 775MHz

I'd say, stay VERY clear of the 128bit version
