Gigabyte 990fxa-ud3 temps

Thread Starter
I recently upgraded a friends of mine computer to a 990fxa-ud3 and another 6870 in CF. First off it all started out just fine, the ambient temps were around 30c so I assumed the machine would turn out quite hot as well, but not THIS hot;
tempsi.png
The NB was in the mid 50's, going even more close to 65+ when starting games and so, all the other temps seemed just fine, minus the cpu (stock cooler until he gets a new one), so it was around 40 idle or so, but I've already clocked it down to 2200mhz, just to keep the temps down for now, to see if it helped (he didn't have any thermal paste left, so I just had to keep it cool until he gets some)

My main concern anyway is the NB anyway, he has a NZXT Phantom with all fans installed - I adjusted the airflow a little to optimize it but didn't seem to help much at all.

Before this upgrade his system temps were much lower (a MSI 870-G45), and nothing else has been changed apart from the second 6870. I've troubleshooted as much as I could, taken out and reseated everything, made sure the NB cooler was properly mounted etc, so I honestly just have NO clue what to do. My only conclusion is the hot temperatures outside, or unless the gigabyte cards are meant to handle extreme temperatures - I honestly don't know.

TLDR; NB is idling at 55+/-, airflow is good but it's hot outside, is this what causes it?

it gets hot becuase the new chipset runs hot and its once piece cooler, just put a fan on it. 58C wont damage anything.

I have the same issue with my board (rev 1.1). Idle 53c full load 70. I contacted Gigabyte about this issue and I was told the ud3 NB can handle a constant temp of 80c. I ordered 2 cooler master megaflow 200mm fans to help lower the temps, and added a 120mm fan to the side of my HAF 912 case. New fans will be in today so I will post a update on if the new fans helped!

Funny I just had the same discovery this morning. Thought wow that looks like some beefy heatsinks compared to my old board but its Super Hot to the touch. I figure its partially because I have liquid cooling, with no CPU fan to move air over them other then the case fans.

No performance issues yet though.

Put a spot cooler on it for now. May try some new paste. Lemme know if nayone has had luck with repaste. Will post as soon as I do just hate to start pulling stuff off a brand new board.

Added a couple fans from hard drive cooler to NB and VREG heatsinks. Cant see my temp in windows but a probe on the lower surface fo the NB is reading 30 at idle and 41 at load so that seems to solve that issue.

I hate anythign over 50 myself. My last CPU didnt even go over 25 degrees under load (Athlon 2 640 4x3.0ghz) 35 if overclocked (3.75).

Cant seem to disable some sort of unknown cool and quiet feature that keeps throttling my CPU down to 1400mhz when idle and shifting between 3090 and 3900 on some of the cores when runnign programs. I shut off cool and quiet and turbo mode but its still doing it.

My NB run cold. The new chipset runs hot, but the NB heatsink is very good at dissipating heat if you have good airflow. My NB on idle is 33C with 20C ambient temp.

Yeah I got the NB down to 30 degrees but it took a loud high rpm 120mm. Would like something that works better.
Has anyone seen a NB waterblock or Air Cooler with 70mm center to center mounting holes?

I cant understande why they had to make it so inconveinient to change.

About ready to drill out the stock one and slide copper tubes through it.

Its normal for it to run hot compared to other chipsets. There is also a problem with the sensors getting stuck. Nothing to worry about, I believe GB said that temps up to 85c is fine.
