[GTX 590] Flashing & Overclocking Thread - Page 17

I used 3DMark11 benchmark. overcloked with msi afterburner.

i tried 0.963~0.975v but there is PDL trotle as the voltege gets higer!

Hapy with 0.938-0.925v. Temps get hige. true: Vsync off gives better performance and more gpu usage! but i dont like the flikering! With Vsync off it sems the loading in some games are faster! Just cuse 2: Vsync ON 27 sec. Vsync OFF 3 sec!! maybe its SLi?
PS! I went from XFX 6990 to Evga GTX 590 and im Very Hapy!!

Problem NR1: The 6990 was to noisy!! i mean Extreme! My friends asked me if someting was wrong with my PC! we played Metro 2033, max settings!
AMD used this litle fan cuse its cheap to produce! They failed!

Problem NR2: Drivers! The control panel is okey and loking god, but they are bad in games.

I overcloked the 6990 with the bios switch on the card. noting more cose off noise!
one more idea (driver related): one of my friends found a video on youtube with 847@1.05v overclock. it was Zotac on air, there were results of 3DMark11 with 13858 graphics score on 267.52 drivers, that are well-known PDL in those drivers doesnt work or mb there is no PDL at all. the idea is to mix them with 280.19 - high perfomance and no protection.

tried 267.52 with 790/1580/3414@1.05v (at 800 3DMark11 just crashed, so 790 is my maximum *sadface* ) and got this

physics score is about 2k higher than before (currently the highest i've reached) but graphics score is no way near 13858 from that video but still 100 points higher than my previous result @720MHz
post #164 of 721
Well as promised I ran some 3DMark11 Benchmarks with a few different voltages to see what's what and here are my results;

CPU @ 4.7GHz, 590 @ 700/1400/1728

0.925v - Crashed.
0.938v - 10147
0.950v - 10123
0.963v - 10058

Interesting!

For the moment my card is stable at the above overclock of 700MHz core, 1400MHz shader @ 0.938v.

Is that PScore or GPU score? If its PScore its not abnormal for them to go up and down as much as 400 points for "no apparent" reason.

I have explained to Jug, and a few others, 3DMark11 is restricted by PDL, many games apparently are not as of 280.19.

You can hit as high as 870 MHz in Metro2033.

Heaven used to be go as high as you want but its not any more, max appears to be about 775~780 MHz.

The max score/performance you can get is between 720~730 MHz at 0.975v to 0.988v, The higher you can get at at 0.975v the better.

Nothing has changed with the new drivers but still, there is this "sweet spot" around 725~730 MHz in most games. Sometimes higher is better, sometimes higher is worse, sometimes higher is just unstable, but okay for a benchmark or two.

Oh I see!

That was PScore, not GPU - I'll have to redo those tests and see what happens.

Also, I want to get involved in your benchmarking thread but it took a lot of time and effort to hit stability on my chip at 4.7GHz and don't really want to start messing with the OC to lower it to 4.4GHz. Is there a simple way?

Keep the voltage the same, and lower multiplier to 44x (assuming base is 100 MHz). Won't hurt it to run with the same voltage that it takes 4700 to be stable.

So I figure this is probably a better thread to talk about overclocking the 590 than the owners club thread.

From there:

Oh man benchmarking can be fun. Now I really can't wait for water. Raging Cain you can bet I'll throw my 590 in your benching thread once it's under water!
After those benches I got super frustrated with the temps of my 2600K so I went through and updated the firmware and BIOS on everything except the 590. My MB was at F1 and it went to F3. After the F3 update my temps fell to ~60 load at 3.8ghz with the awful intel cooler. Not bad considering they hit 78 at 4.0ghz before.

I also took the 590 a little further. I got the cores up to 690mhz at .913 and 1758 memory. 1800 would crash 3DMark at those speeds. Sadly, I didn't take any screenshots but ran two benches with it and got gfx scores of:
10505 and 10341. I also reran the 670/1758 combo that got me 10525 gfx at 3.4ghz and it scored like ~9800 gfx which seemed very strange. After the F3 update I dropped ~1.5fps in Heaven (down from 50fps at 680/1758) and a few hundred in 3DMark. I'll push my chip back up to 4Ghz for a few runs and see what happens.

ETA: Okay Gigabyte's BIOS seem to have nerfed some things.

680/1758 @ 4Ghz: P9912 Gfx 10242

670/1758 @ 4Ghz: P9833 Gfx 10144

Augh. This is seriously frustrating. Low(er) temps or low(er) performance?

You guys have to understand that the faster your CPU is, the faster GPUs will appear, but only to a certain extent.

There are so many factors that affect your score, even before you start overclocking a GPU.

The best advice I can give any of you, is to change one thing at a time and record your results, like my 590vs6990 benchmark thread. The first thing I did was get a completely stable CPU overclock. After that, I increase usually just the GPU frequency on the core, till it is no longer stable. Once I have it as high as it will go, I then increase memory speeds till performance either starts going back down, or it crashes. Which ever comes first.

Going in small steps and using ONE program at a time really helps.
