Memory for Crosshair Formula IV

Thread Starter
Hey guys,
First off, bare with me, I seem to write very conveluded posts.
I just got a new mobo, and a new processor. I already purchased some ram, but I'm not happy with it, particularly because, and just as an example, when i run the auto-overclock on my Formula IV, it puts my memory to 958~. and my cpu at 3.8ghz. Well, I'd love to have something that'll auto overclock to a bit higher. I plan on learning a lot about over clocking and taking the painstaking time to get it clean and stable, but this ram is holding me back.

This is what i have:

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231311

(That is about as tall as I can go with ram because my cpu cooler is there, and i'm already in the second set of dimms)

I would like to bring my processor up into the 4.0 ghz range. I believe I have cooling enough for it because at 3.8ghz, I run at about 38c... BUT Even if I can't get that high, I'd like to just be happy with my ram and have a little overhead if possible to play with. I figure if I could get it to just run stable at 1600, I'd be happy.

I've seen lots of people recommend different ram. When i just look on newegg, 24 people are happy with this ram and it seems like awesome ram:

CORSAIR XMS3 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145325

But, lots of other people (here at Overclock.net) have said they'd just as soon have this (and it's cheaper):

G.SKILL ECO 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231404

I'm more tempted to go with the corsair, just because I'll have some room to play and could possible get it up to 1866 with stock stats.

Feel free to recommend something else if you think it's worth looking at!

Can someone PLEASE advise. And when you do, please tell me why.. That whole teach a man to fish, vs give a man a fish thing.

Thank you guys! I greatly appreciate it.

- Daniel

ps. I plan on upgrading my PSU to around 850watt and getting a new craphics card. That'll put me set with a system that I can be very happy with.... Even though I play mainly CS, and WoTMud. <-- that's a text based game. haha.

Those timings are for intel plataforms so they may not work for amd's. Those corsairs rated @2000 may not work at that speed or may work at the speed with very high timings, and remember amd benefits more from lower timings than for higher speeds, 1600 cl6 > 2000 cl10
I say go for the Eco's, they can run at 1600 cl 6 with a little of tweaking.

try to get the eco edition at 1600 mhz.. try to aim for lower timings at 1600 mhz speed and your good to go. I still love my corsair dominator gt 1600mhz @ 7-7-7-20.

So.. I'd be going from
9-9-9-24 @ 1.5V to (DDR3 1333)
8-8-8-24 @ 1.35V. (DDR3 1600)
Its not really that big of a jump is it?

What I mean is, can I get those clocks down to CAS 7 on the 1600? It seems like it's going very much further into the overclocking realm that i wanted to.

BTW. Thanks for the quick responses.

..ps.. again.. I am a newbie. I imagine you'll say, just bump the power to 1.6v, change some stuff and vuala, you got CAS 7... but, it's doing that part and know what to do that gives me the doubt that it can be done.

The x6's are very simple to overclock. I absolutely would not suggest using the auto-overclock feature on the board. You aren't going to get it to 4+ stable with that.

As for your ram, the sweet spot for AMD chips is going to be around 1600mhz~ with good timings.

You have such a full-featured board, and if you just use the auto-overclock feature it would be a real shame. Use the search and you can quickly learn how to overclock that chip properly, and you may not even need to upgrade your memory.

Hey, I appreciate the response there aestetics1. Though, I am going to change my ram, so right now I need some suggestions with what exactly to do. I have been looking around and reading some suggestions. It's just that you come to a place like this and everyone has different opinions.
I don't have the cashflow to try several setups or what not.

But should I do 4x2gb, or 2x4gb? I can only do 4x2gb if they're short ones, my cpu cooler is too large.

Once I have my memory, and bigger power supply than 500watt, i'll do some serious overclocking. Right now I want to do some mild stuff.

And using the auto-overclock feature was just an example. Even if I don't do much, using that with what I gather to be a sweet mobo would just be a waste.

I am 90% sure right now that i'll buy the 2x4gb g.skill echo ram mentioned above, but I want to make sure I make the right choice. The first stuff I bought, I /thought/ I knew what I was doing, this time I want to make sure.

Also, once last thing. 4gb or 8gb.... Do you really need 8gb? I mean, is there a difference in performance with 4 DIMMS vs 2 DIMMS? I hear that you sorta have to up the power to the VDRAM? So 1 more step in figuring it out?

Thanks!

PS. After I get the ram that'll best suite me, I'll stop asking so many reduntant open ended newb questions and just study the boards to do some overclocking. Thanks for your patience!
