No backlight on screen

Thread Starter
I'm changing the screen for someone because his screen was cracked. I disconnected the connector for the screen and plugged it into the new one. I saw nothing on the screen. I was thinking maybe the screen was defective. Then, I tried putting the old screen back in and there is no backlight. I have to hold a flashlight to the screen to see anything. Why would this be? What am I doing wrong? Here's a picture of the back of the screen. It's a Sony Vaio VPCCW21FX

Is there supposed to be more than one connector? I only have one in because I didn't notice another one. It says "ground only" by the connector.

I've had an HP inverter go bad before, new inverter got the backlight working again, drop in replacement mostly. PCHub had the best price on the model I needed.

But why would it go bad on 2 screens at the same time?
And is the backlight under the black tape at the bottom of the screen?
