[Worklog] AquaNES - Scratch Case & Water Cooling Build

Thread Starter
Introduction
I started an NES PC build around 2 years ago that was going to house my old gaming rig I upgraded (Core 2 Duo, 4gb DDR2, etc). After some major setbacks (frying the HDD, Unable to find a PSU that fit internally, my dremeling skills being horrible, case looking like crap, it goes on) I finally gave up as I didn’t have the time or money to sink into it. Two pictures from my original build can be found here and here.

After recently seeing Robertwhamm’s Watercooled NES project here on OCN it rejuvenated my interested in doing one of my own. This time I’ll be doing it with an added twist – it will be watercooled just as he was doing! However, my goal is to see if I can get everything to fit in a single NES case without having to enlarge/extend it. If I have to, I’m willing to, but I’m going to do everything I can to keep that from happening.

I'll be updating this post with pictures/content as parts arrive throughout the project.

My first shipment of parts arrived last night (July 11, 2011). It included the NES donor shell, various sample sleevings and heat shrinks, my power supply, and an adapter for the fans I use.

Here's a pile of all those parts - DSC07197.jpg

And two shots showing you how small the power supply is in comparison to an NES controller.

Case arrived last night (July 11, 2011), so I couldn't help but start tearing it apart. I'll still have to dremel all the stubs, flatten the bottom of it (which will probably include using bondo to get it nice and smooth), and who knows what else to make all this stuff fit!

I started dremeling out the NES case tonight (July 14, 2011) so everything will be able to fit. I still have to figure out something to do to flatten the bottom of it. Perhaps cut out the raised area and then bondo it back in place flat with the rest of the bottom of the case? I'll gladly take suggestions here, too.

Just got back from class. No packages today like I thought there would be, so I'm gonna kick it old school for a while before bed on my working NES.

Thanks cool.gif

Just checked PayPal, USPS, etc and got confirmation that a few items will be arriving today from bmaverick and Sidewinder Computers biggrin.gif

Here's what's on the list...I'll post up pics once I'm home from work.
  • Laing DDC-1 Pump
  • Swiftech Apogee X2 revision 2 CPU Block
  • Swiftech MCRES Micro Revision 2 Reservoir
  • Sample Heat Shrink and Sleeving Samples
  • Bitspower Low Profile Stop Fitting (cheap part and wanted to check the quality/appearance of the matte black Bitspower fittings)
  • Replacement O-Rings for the DDC-1
  • Replacement O-Rings for G1/4 Fittings
  • Power Supply ATX Jumper (for the price so much easier than using the paper clip trick!)

Also got status updates on a few other things that shipped.
  • XSPC Laing DDC Acetal Top (Left AZ this morning from Hellfire Toyz)
  • Tubing Samples (Left IN this morning from Sidewinder Computers)
  • Sleeving, Heatshrink, and Paracord Samples (Left CA yesterday from FTW PC)

And have two more things on order that have yet to ship.
  • Spare broken NES shell (just in case *no pun intended*)
  • G.Skill RAM from original post

Not sure if all these updates with no products yet are ok, but I'm pretty excited to get this going so thought I'd share mario.gif

Time for another update since my second shipment of parts came today! Laing DDC-1 Pump, Swiftech MCRES Micro Revision 2 Reservoir, Swiftech Apogee XT Revision 2 CPU Block, Bitspower Low Profile Stop Fitting, Replacement G1/4 O-Rings, Replacement Laing DDC-1 O-Rings, 1/4" Heatshrink, 1/4" Sleeving, and Power Supply ATX Jumper.

I'm beginning to have bad thoughts about the reservoir sitting. I'll have to take a picture later, but it's taller than I thought the Swiftech's site showed, which means that it won't fit in the NES case standing up. It can't be turned sideways and function properly, can it?

Here's the pile of 'em smile.gif If you want more pictures from this shipment then check out the Parts, Parts, and More Parts! post. - DSC07208.jpg

Also, I started messing with sleeving from the samples I received. I've never sleeved before, so I used an old non-working power supply to practice. I'm fairly happy with what I accomplished...how do you think I did?
DSC07140.jpg

I like the different colored heat shrinks as well (one of each color heatshrink on each color cable to find which way I like best). I'm thinking Black Sleeve/Red Heatshrink, Red Sleeve/Grey Heatshrink, Grey Sleeve/Black Heatshrink.
DSC07161.jpg

I'm really happy with how the twisted set came out but I'm not sure if I could easily do that for the real deal. I'm also really happy with the three colors - I've still got quite a few sleeving samples on the way so I can't decide anything until after they arrive, but the Red/Black/Grey combo would really work out well, I think.

Thanks. I need to figure out whether there's a fourth color I can add to that for all the 4-pin connectors I have, or if I should just repeat one of the colors. Hopefully FTW PC likes the dark grey sleeving sample they get in next week and I can order it all from them smile.gif
