Linux or Windows for GPU folding

Thread Starter
When I go back to school in August I get free electricity, and am planning on starting to fold again.

I have a spare i7 920 and GTX470 system that I want as a dedicated folding machine, but I don't know how well Linux handles GPU folding. I get free copies of Windows from my school so I can just do that, but I kinda want a Linux system to play around with.

So...Does Linux support GPU/CPU folding just as well as Windows, or am I better off just using Windows for the maximum amount of points?

Thanks!

I think you have to run WINE to get GPU folding to work in linux (could be wrong).

Thanks, if thats the case it will probably significantly slower and a pain in the butt. So I'll probably end up going with Windows then.

Always heard it was a pain to get GPU folding working in Linux... So I just use windows.

But Linux does massivly better in SMP-folding, not enough to not use the GTX470 though but I would get the SMP running and add the 470 after that.

I ran my old 8800GTS under Ubuntu a while back and it was a PITA to setup and then it just crashed and I couldn't be bothered to get it working again so just switched to Win that time. No change in PPD though between Win and Ubuntu on GPU-folding.

I'd recommend sticking with Windows, and using a VM of Linux for your i7, which would also allow you to Fold on the GPU without incurring massive lag.

A VM is a good idea, best of both worlds, play with linux and still have the windows backbone where I know how to do stuff. Good idea, thanks Zodac, you're the best!

Significantly slower? Probably not, wine runs better than Windows in a few cases (Eg. WoW) and PITB? Depends on the application.

But yeah, F@H-GPU doesn't run as well in Linux as it does in Windows and it can be a bit of a PITB to set up, but depending on your CPU you can more than make it up/beat it in SMP.

My 275 worked fine in Arch Linux GPU folding, I did get 1k PPD less which was made up by the 2k PPD increase I got with my CPU, although this was a little while ago so the numbers may have changed.
But for this situation, VMs are the best place to go as Zodac said.

When I tried it in february I got expected numbers for my gpu's, however each gpu used an entire cpu thread at 100% the entire time which massively impacted my bigadv folding. I wouldn't recommend it at all for gpu folding because of this.
